What started as a routine apartment sale at a 160-unit HDFC in South Harlem quickly escalated into a major structural repair project. When a shareholder tried to sell her unit, sagging floors revealed a more significant issue: broken beams beneath the floorboards. The repairs required a full gut of the apartment to access and address the compromised structure, putting the sale on hold. Habitat Magazine spoke with RAND Senior Structural Engineer Eugene Gurevich, PE, AIA, LEED AP who shared his expertise on how these issues often arise in aging buildings and the importance of involving a structural engineer early in the process to evaluate and resolve them. We’re honored to share this heartfelt letter from Immanuel Lutheran Church, recently sent to RAND Principal Peter Varsalona, PE, CEM, CBCP and Architectural Team Leader Michael J Langwell, RA, NCARB regarding the recent pro-bono work they provided in response to concern about cracks and fallen plaster observed in the church’s Sanctuary area: “Yesterday our congregation was able to return to our church nave for worship — thanks to your work. We want you to know we are very grateful to you. From time to time, I would go into the church during the scaffold work and admire all the skill involved in evaluating the problem, working out a solution, and doing it. I felt we were in good hands with you and Gotham General Carpentry. We are very pleased with the entire project. Thank you!” – Pastor Reverand Gregory Fryer, Immanuel Lutheran Church

We love working with New Alternatives For Children (NAC) to support the important work they do with children and families. Each year, our RAND Gives Back team comes together for a special backpack packing event, assembling school supplies for NAC children to help them start the school year strong. NAC’s mission of empowering children with medical complexities and supporting their families resonates deeply with us, and we’re proud to contribute to their efforts in providing care and opportunities for these incredible kids. #RANDGivesBack
🎒 A huge thank you to our friends at RAND Engineering & Architecture, DPC for helping our NAC kids get ready for the school year by stuffing backpacks full of supplies! ✏️📚 Every year, you show up and make sure NAC kids start the school year with everything they need.
