Ever wonder where the first interstate highway is? We did, too – but the answer isn’t as simple as the question. According to the Federal Highway Administration, Missouri, Kansas, and Pennsylvania all stake a claim—and each has a solid case: 🛣️Missouri: On August 2, 1956, they awarded the first-ever contract under the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 for U.S. Route 66, now I-44. 🛣️ Kansas: On September 26, 1956, Kansas started paving the first section of I-70, which became the first completed project under the Act. 🛣️ Pennsylvania: The Pennsylvania Turnpike opened in 1940, years before the 1956 Act, leading Pennsylvanians to call it the “Granddaddy of the Pikes.” It was later incorporated into the system but with all due respect, you can’t technically be a grandpa before the grandbaby comes along.
