In the early 20th century, truck makers focused on building powerful engines for better speed and performance. While major roads were paved, the “last mile” often meant navigating rough terrain. With this newfound power, trucks could move heavier freight at faster speeds, but it meant more wear on the tires and less control over the load. The solution? More axles and the introduction of dual-wheel trucks and trailers. These innovations improved traction, evenly distributed the load, and provided redundancy in case of a blowout. Which company got to market first with dual wheels, though? It's tough to pinpoint since the line between stock and aftermarket features is a bit blurry. However, International Harvester introduced dual wheels on its 1934 Model-C series trucks, the earliest production reference we've found.
