About us

Raphael House of Portland has provided life-saving emergency shelter to adults and children escaping domestic violence since 1977. We offer personalized, one-on-one support to help survivors achieve housing, employment, self-sufficiency, and safety. Raphael House also works to prevent future violence through community education. Annually Raphael House serves 130 adults and children in our emergency shelter, assists 1,200 callers on a 24-hour access line, supports 480 survivors with ongoing programming, and reaches 3,000+ youth and adults with prevention education workshops. We believe that everyone deserves to live a life free from violence. The mission of Raphael House is to engage our entire community in non-violent living through advocacy, education, and community outreach, and by providing a safe haven from domestic violence.

  • October 9th is Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day! #HCADV This day raises awareness among healthcare and advocacy communities about the critical importance of universal education to promote equitable relationships, address the health impact of abuse, and offer warm referrals to domestic violence advocates. Why is universal education so important? 30-54% of female patients seeking emergency services, 21-66% seeking general medical care, and up to 20% seeking prenatal care report experiencing intimate partner violence. This is also why we have a dedicated Health Care Advocate stationed at Oregon Health & Science University’s Richmond Clinic, so patients can get support with domestic violence from the safety of their doctor’s office. Get more information from Futures Without Violence through the link in our comments.

There were so many wonderful survivors, community partners, elected officials, and friends that joined us to celebrate! As our Executive Director Emmy Ritter shared at the event, “How fortunate we are to be together in this beautiful room filled with people who care so deeply for their community.” All our gratitude to everyone who contributed to help make this critical fundraiser possible. • Thank you to our board member Angel Jones ☁️ for helping make our 2024 Gala presented by The Standard such a special celebration! We appreciate all you do to support domestic violence survivors on Gala night, and all year long.

Last night's Raphael House of Portland's annual Gala was something special. From hearing from the families helped by RHPDX to escape domestic violence to hearing from the staff who are working in all of the Portland public high schools to help students break the cycle – it's why I continue to support this organization. I always appreciate learning how survivors have worked with RHPDX to rebuild their lives, start businesses, pursue additional education or certifications, or join the Raphael House staff to help others. A big shout-out and thanks to my table for joining me and continuing the trend of winning one of the cakes from the Dessert Dash. (No pressure on my table next year ...) And, a huge thank you to all of the sponsors, area businesses who contributed to the auction, donors, and the incredible Raphael House of Portland staff for another fantastic Gala!

Our most exuberant thanks to everyone who joined us last night to support and uplift survivors at our annual Raphael House of Portland Gala presented by The Standard. The joy, strength, and love of our community was palpable! More than 300 wonderful friends and supporters came together to help raise critical funds for our life-saving domestic violence services – and gifts are still coming in! We can’t wait to share the final total with you. 👏 All of us extend our deepest gratitude to the many generous individuals and businesses who made this possible – especially our guest speaker Paula and her children, who are survivors, leaders at Raphael House and in the community, and owners of the phenomenal La Cuchara food truck in SE Portland. Together we’re building a bright future that’s free from domestic violence!

  • Our biggest THANK YOU to this amazing community who contributed to our Back To School Drive at Raphael House of Portland! We are overwhelmed by all who showed love and care for survivor families by purchasing enough supplies to fill a record 150 backpacks. 💜 One parent shared, “I was so stressed about backpacks and supplies for my kids. I was scared I would have to skip on them this year to pay for other needs. Thankfully, I was able to find backpacks for all my kids here and that has been such a relief.”
