Following World War II, Jack Stratham, known as "Alabama Jack," founded the iconic Alabama Jack’s. Though originally from Sumpter County, Georgia, he earned his nickname due to his southern accent. Jack’s career began as a riveter on the Empire State Building before transitioning into global construction work. In 1953, Jack and his wife Alice, renowned for her crab cakes, purchased a lease in Card Sound and built Alabama Jack’s Place just over the Monroe County line. Initially meant as a simple weekend retreat for their boat, it soon evolved into a full-service fishing camp. Today, Alabama Jack’s is a popular restaurant and bar located at 58000 Card Sound Rd., Key Largo. #AlabamaJacks #History #FloridaKeys

When the first Overseas Highway opened in 1928, travelers had to wait for a car ferry at Lower Matecumbe Key, as there was no continuous road to the Lower Keys. To serve these waiting passengers, a cafe called Terminal Lunch was established, providing a much-needed respite. Featured in a 1928 business brochure, Terminal Lunch became a key stop for travelers, with ferries departing at 8:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M., despite frequent delays due to equipment issues and shallow waters. #History #FloridaKeys

The Rebecca Shoal Lighthouse, the last to be built in the Florida Keys, was both challenging to construct and unique in design. Lt. G. Gordon Meade initially surveyed the site in 1852, but the lighthouse was not lit until November 1886. The original structure was a three-story wooden "cabin" with the lantern atop. Automated in 1925, the cabin was removed in 1953, and today, the lighthouse operates with a solar-powered rotating optic beam. #History #FloridaKeys
