Hurricanes can severely disrupt emergency services, leading to significant surges in 911 call volumes. For instance, Hurricane Helene resulted in some ECCs experiencing up to a 40-fold increase in calls during peak hours. With extreme winds and flooding from Hurricane #Milton expected to impact Florida’s West Coast this week, outages and 911 call surges are likely. While traditional 911 systems may struggle during hurricanes, RapidSOS offers a redundant digital connection to most US 911 centers. Here are some key reminders to share with your community and contacts in Western Florida in preparation for Milton’s landfall. ⛑️ Best Practices for Reaching 911 During Hurricane Milton ⛑️ ✅ Only call 911 for life-threatening emergencies: During storms, 911 lines are often overwhelmed. Keeping calls limited to true emergencies ensures help reaches those in immediate danger faster. ✅ Connect to Wi-Fi and enable Wi-Fi calling when possible: Cellular networks can become unreliable during hurricanes, but Wi-Fi calling may provide a more stable connection for emergency calls. ✅ If you can’t make a voice call, try texting 911: Texting can still work even when voice calls fail, providing alternate methods to reach emergency services. ✅ Use Emergency SOS over Satellite (available on some devices): In areas with no cellular service, devices with satellite SOS features can still connect to emergency responders. ✅ If a call doesn’t go through, 911 may still receive your location and contact details: Even if calls drop, 911 may capture the caller’s location and try to make contact via call or text.

How do we knit together the intelligent devices to facilitate the fastest, most effective response in an emergency? In addressing this, we faced three foundational challenges: ✅ Human Detection ✅ Integrate data into the 911 environment ✅ Move from a reactive to a proactive state RapidSOS CEO, Michael Martin, sat down with the Eye On A.I. podcast recently. Grateful for all the public safety agencies working through the widespread carrier outage today, affecting more than 100,000+ users. While the specifics are still unknown, the outage appears to primarily affect users in parts of Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Connecticut, West Virginia, and Maryland. Affected users are unable to make calls, send text messages, or access the web unless they have wi-fi connectivity. Our team has been supporting agencies in maintaining the continuity of operations since early this morning when we first detected issues. RapidSOS provides a redundant pathway to legacy 911 infrastructure in outages, helping support the incredible work of public safety. If you are impacted by the Verizon outage in communities across the U.S.: ✅ Do not call 9-1-1 unless you’re experiencing a life-threatening emergency. ✅ Where possible, ensure you’re connected to wi-fi and enable wi-fi calling ✅ If placing a call is not possible, try to text 9-1-1 ✅ Emergency SOS over Satellite feature (device dependent) may also activate to help you reach emergency services ✅ Even if your call does not connect, 9-1-1 may receive your location and contact information and may try to call or text you back (sometimes via a 9-1-1 number and sometimes via a 10-digit number) For up-to-date information on the outage, please visit https://hubs.li/Q02RxLB30
