Distressed denim, on the other hand, refers to jeans and other denim garments that have been treated to look worn or “distressed.” This style has been popular for its aesthetic appeal, but it raises questions about the sustainability of intentionally damaging clothing for fashion, which slow fashion seeks to address by promoting mindful consumption and valuing the longevity of garments. This is because the majority of the environmental impact of a garment comes from its production, not its use. In addition to reducing our carbon footprint, mending our clothes can also save us money. The average American household spends about $1,200 per year on new clothes. By mending our clothes, we can save money on our clothing budget and put that money towards other things.
