As the media/content world continues to evolve so must our strategies and counsel. It is critical we understand exactly how outlets are diversifying their distribution avenues to attract/retain consumers. With Google and Facebook making news less prominent on their platforms, publishers are now turning to WhatsApp Channels (WAC). “WAC has quickly become a huge source of traffic, larger than X,” according to some outlets. Noticias Telemundo reported gaining 30,000 followers in one week and now has 820,000 followers. Original content, such as short videos from the ground or polls are examples of what consumers are responding to the most. The Financial Times is also reporting great success with free access to daily content which is traditionally paid. The traffic numbers do not compare to Google or Facebook yet, but they are trending in the right direction. This may be a function of the control it gives to consumers who can choose what they see and when. WACs also makes it easy to forward information and links on private chat groups–the privacy and ease factors being key. The WAC trend also aligns well with Substack and how we are seeing influencers, writers and media transition to the platform to serve exclusive content–in this case via a subscription model—to those who are most interested in it, i.e., “the super engaged.” Do you have a favorite WAC?
