A highlight of the event was a presentation on the Horizon Europe project Re-Place, focusing on the challenges faced by 'left-behind' places. The European Researchers' Night is a significant annual event with a noble mission to popularize science and ignite public interest in various scientific fields. About us
Re-Place (Reframing Non-Metropolitan Left Behind Places Through Mobility and Alternative Development) is a project co-funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe program, with 7 partners from 6 European countries. The overall objective is to mobilize participative research in nonmetropolitan left-behind areas (LBAs), to examine the impact that spatial (im)mobility has on origin and destination areas and how it can be harnessed to improve local alternative development, cooperative building of human capital, wellbeing and sustainability across contexts.

We are proud to highlight the significant contribution made by Latvian geographers from the University of Latvia (University of Latvia (Latvijas Universitāte) during this prestigious event. 📢Re-Place at the 12th International Conference on Population Geographies at the Queen's University Belfast. Re-Place researchers from Latvia and Romania met and collaborated in Northern Ireland to represent the project within the rural migration/immobility trends. Human geographers from Latvia (University of Latvia (Latvijas Universitāte), Prof. Zaiga Krisjane, Assoc. Prof. Maris Berzins, Assoc. Prof. Elina Apsite Berina and PhD student Sindija Balode took an active and engaging role in thematic sessions on neighbourhood Diversity and Cohesion, Migration: Youth and Education, and Ethnic and social segregation. Also, a researcher at the Research Institute for the Quality of Life, Mădălina Manea, took an active role as a speaker in the thematic session on Health and Mortality.
