This week, I had the privilege of attending and sponsoring the ReadySetGC Summit in Chicago, an initiative and community founded by Deborah Solmor, the General Counsel of Gateway, dedicated to supporting and empowering women GCs. Deborah's vision for ReadySetGC stemmed from her own experience of stepping into the GC role and realizing the lack of tailored programs for professional development for women at this crucial time in their careers. At the Summit, hosted at Skadden's gorgeous new office, a diverse group of seasoned leaders shared advice and lessons learned from their time in the C-suite. A few moments that stood out: 🌟the 80/20 rule, around 80% of your decisions/counsel will be correct, and the other 20% may not be. It’s not your job to be perfect. 💡you sit at the head of the table. All of the successes and accomplishments of your team accrue to you. You should lift them up. 🔅it’s not your job to get the business leaders to follow your recommendation. They are accepting the risk. Do not internalize this or take it personally. I think this is a HUGELY impactful piece of advice that most new legal leaders don’t fully absorb and a lot of stress results. 🏦enhance your financial acumen. Strive to understand the objective of major transactions so you can put the deal terms into context (also half the time, even the biz leaders have different ideas of what the goals are). A running theme was the importance of developing business acumen alongside legal expertise. The day was a truly immersive experience that fostered community and uplifted hearts and minds. It was wonderful to share my own journey of founding Streamline with the amazing women present, and I was absolutely *delighted* when I realized that one of the attendees was a Streamline customer that I was meeting in person for the first time. We are so happy to be supporting you, Deborah. This is just the beginning! Chicago RSGC Program: A Wrap! 🎉 Reflecting on yesterday's event and the powerful conversations shared, we wanted to pass along some standout advice from our amazing panelists for new women GCs: 💡 Ask for Help: It's a superpower, not a weakness. Leveraging your network is key to success. 💡 Advise on Risk Tolerance: Compliance with all laws may be impossible, so it’s crucial to guide your organization on which risks to focus. 💡 Communicate Effectively: Don’t feel the need to voice every opinion immediately. Choose your moments and your words wisely. 💡 Stay Calm in Crisis: Your team looks to you for stability. Project calm, no matter the situation. 💡 Pay It Forward: Be a woman who lifts others. There’s room for all of us at the table. ❓ We’re still buzzing from the energy in the room and would love to hear your thoughts! What advice would you add? See you in Atlanta on November 13th!
