To continue delivering affordable and reliable electricity to ratepayers, utilities need to address a number of interrelated challenges. Load growth, retiring capacity, the need to integrate renewables, and increasing reliability risks from extreme weather all put pressure on grid infrastructure and operations. Virtual power plants (VPPs) are uniquely suited to address these challenges. Power Shift, the latest study from VP3 and RMI, demonstrates how VPPs can enable renewable integration, cut net generation costs, reduce the need for new gas capacity, and potentially save ratepayers hundreds of dollars per year through avoided T&D costs. Maximizing the impact of VPPs, however, requires updated approaches to grid planning and operations, according to the study.
