One of our lawyer friends likes to remind us that “all hiring is discrimination.” Before you go crazy, here's what she means: The act of hiring itself is choosing wisely, given multiple options. You’re literally saying no – discriminating – based on the evidence at hand. One of the problems with choosing wisely is that sometimes you can’t get candidates to talk about what matters to you. Or, you can’t get your team to remember to ask candidates about what matters to you. Or, you don’t know how to ask the kinds of questions that get a candidate to talk, without them parroting what they think you want to hear. This is a serious problem. You spent decades building your company. You don’t have time for someone who can't be bothered to read your mission statement or talk about it.
