In honor of World Lung Cancer Day, we wanted to highlight the work of a team of researchers throughout the UK, including The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester, determined to better understand the impact of COVID-19 on patients undergoing treatment for stage I–III lung cancer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, guidelines were published to reduce the number of hospital visits and potential exposure of vulnerable patients to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection during radiotherapy. Using REDCap Cloud technology, researchers conducted a prospective multicenter UK cohort study and found that 34% of patients had a change in their treatment, mainly involving an increase in hypofractionation (fewer, larger doses). Factors such as age, male gender, and stage III disease were associated with a higher likelihood of treatment changes. The opioid crisis has sparked a public health emergency as the number of addictions and deaths continue to rise. Led by Olufemi (Femi) Ayeni, researchers from McMaster University used REDCap Cloud technology to support the Non-Opioid Prescriptions after Arthroscopic Surgery in Canada (NO PAin) Trial to determine whether a non-opioid approach to postoperative pain was effective in reducing pain and opioid dependency. In patients who received arthroscopic knee or shoulder surgery, implementing a multimodal opioid-sparing postoperative pain management approach led to a significant reduction in postoperative opioid consumption over a period of 6 weeks when compared to the conventional practice of standard opioid prescribing. Ensuring better representation in clinical trials is crucial for understanding the impacts of new treatments across a wider range of the population. To that end, the U.S. FDA has released draft guidance requiring Diversity Action Plans from medical product sponsors to boost enrollment of underrepresented populations in clinical studies. These plans provide an important roadmap to foster broader inclusion in clinical trials, ultimately enhancing the safety and efficacy understanding of medical products. Throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, the Ebola virus presents serious risks to both pregnant women and their unborn children. Using REDCap Cloud’s EDC and Randomization solutions, a team of researchers including the Rwanda Zambia Health Research Group based at Emory University School of Medicine and The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson embarked on an ambitious phase 3 study involving 2,000 pregnant women to understand the safety and efficacy of the 2-dose Ebola vaccine regimen. Is real-time data sharing the key to enhancing performance in clinical trials? According to the UK’s former health minister, James O'Shaughnessy, the need for real-time data sharing will go a long way in boosting the UK's clinical research landscape. Highlighting a government target to quadruple UK clinical trial activity by 2027, O’Shaughnessy notes that better data sharing between public and private sectors, a comprehensive real-time data portal, and clearer data-sharing agreements are crucial steps for driving growth within clinical research. Creating a better understanding of how our bodies develop immunity to COVID-19 is a critical factor in enhancing vaccine efficacy, improving public health strategies, and ultimately controlling the spread of the virus. The goal of the International Quality Improvement Collaborative for Congenital Heart Disease (IQIC) is to reduce mortality and major complications for children undergoing congenital heart surgery. With this in mind, leading institutions including Boston Children's Hospital and Children's National Hospital Heart Institute, collected data across 32 IQIC sites in 20 countries using REDCap Cloud Registries to better understand the implications of congenital heart disease surgeries in low- and middle-income countries.
