Continuing our #RareEarthElement series, next up is element number 63, Europium! Named after the European continent and discovered by Eugène-Antole Demarçay in 1896, Europium has many practical applications. Europium plays a vital role in producing vibrant red colors in both television screens and smartphones. Europium is also an excellent neutron absorber, which makes it a great material for control rods in nuclear reactors. #Europium #Electronics

REEgen has joined the Rare Earth Industry Association (REIA)! REIA is an international non-profit organization that represents the global rare earth element industry. Their mission is to serve, promote, and advance the sustainable development of the global rare earth chain. Dr. Alexa Schmitz, Chief Executive Officer and founder of REEgen, commented, “We are excited to join such an important global organization that is at the forefront of supporting the rare-earth industry. At REEgen, we have a vision to create clean processes for rare-earth production, and we want that vision to reflect a global perspective for the future of these critical metals. For this week's #REEgenTechTuesday, we are talking about rare earth elements (REEs)! REEgen was named after these elements, so what are they? The rare earth elements are a set of 17 metallic elements. 15 of these metals on the periodic table are known as lanthanides; the other two are scandium and yttrium. They all share similar geochemical properties that make them important for electronics, catalysts, and magnets - like in the motors of electric cars and windmill turbines. REE are actually abundant in the earth's crust, but they are very dispersed, making their extraction difficult, which gave the impression they were “rare”. REEgen uses clean #biomining technology, with the help of Gluconobacter oxydans, to extract these elements, especially from industrial byproducts that often simply go to landfills.
