This past Friday, REAL had the great honor and opportunity of hosting a film screening of the critically acclaimed “On The Mountain,” followed by an engaging discussion panel in partnership with the GW International Education Association & Women for Afghan Women (WAW). Joined by WAW’s Executive Director, Susan Aryan Antolin, Ed.D., and Naheed Samadi Bahram, WAW’s US Country Director, the panel discussion shed light on the struggles of Afghan refugees and informed our shared communities of the critical efforts and impact of WAW’s initiatives to assist Afghan women and girls. Earlier today, our Lab’s Director, Bernhard Streitwieser, was featured as a Refugee Resettlement Initiative Champion! REAL is grateful for his thoughtful mentorship, support, and dedication to uplifting refugees and displaced communities through his work in higher education and humanitarian realms. Congratulations, Dr. Streitwieser! #RRIChampion #RefugeeResettlementInitiative
Dr. Bernhard Streitwieser started the Refugee Educational Advancement Laboratory (REAL) in 2021 because he felt the Masters students in his “Refugees and Education” class needed more of an outlet to become active in research and advocacy supporting the educational aspirations of refugees. The first big project was to write a book to share interviews they conducted with resettled refugees in the DC-MD and VA areas. The book is coming out later this month with Rowman & Littlefield Press! The REAL site also publishes monthly blog posts and disseminates ongoing research projects, events, and news. REAL seeks to be a welcoming site for anyone interested in staying informed about and working actively in refugee and at-risk migrant issues. Their main challenge is funding. If anyone is interested in how they can financially support REAL, contact Dr. Streitwieser at streitwieser@gwu.edu. https://lnkd.in/emMsxmdH #RRIChampion #RefugeeResettlementInitiative
