Drought has afflicted thousands of farms and ranches across North America this year. Regenerative farmers can’t avoid being caught up in it. But they can count on an enduring advantage: healthier soil. It gives them resilience when they need it most. Whatever little moisture falls on their land, they will keep and be able to use it. There are regenerative farms like Axten Farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, that still raised a crop while facing the most severe drought year in their farm’s history. The Axtens were able to harvest a 50% yield from their fields with a fraction of their typical rainfall. How? It’s the way they take care of their soil—what they do and what they don’t do. By minimizing tillage and chemical inputs, keeping living roots in the ground and armor covering the earth to limit evaporation and erosion, and encouraging biodiversity, they enable microbial life in the soil to thrive with sufficient shelter, food, water, air, and hospitable temperatures. This helps build soil aggregates that reinforce the soil's structural integrity, so it's ready and able to infiltrate what rainfall they get—and hold that moisture longer. Abundant microbial activity in their soil helps to warm the ground in the spring, melting the snow to start their growing season earlier. And healthy soil not only helps water get in, it allows carbon dioxide to cycle more freely, so plants can use it more readily in higher concentrations near the ground to aid photosynthesis and grow better. When Derek and Tannis Axten committed to improving soil health years ago, they probably didn’t envision thinking a yield like that would be a laudable accomplishment. But in a record drought, getting only two inches of rain from the day the snow melted until three weeks before the harvest—in the same year that some of their neighbors experienced total crop loss—they are getting through it. That’s resilience. The ability to take a hit and keep going. When regenerative farmers practice soil health principles, they join their farm with the master of resiliency: Mother Nature.

So great to see Riverbend Malt House—the world’s first certified regenerative malt house—back to doing what they love.
Just before Helene hit, we had several new malt products queued to release for y'all. We're pretty excited about this one— it's been a long time in the making, and it helps us visualize our future during a time of unprecedented catastrophe in our community. We believe in the resilience of our supply chain, and strive to improve it through investments like our Regenified™ certification. Behold— our first batch of certified Regenified™ Southern Select in the germination room! We used an old school floor malt approach for this first batch. Kilned with moderate temperatures to balance color development and enzyme preservation. Clocking in around 2.8 SRM, expect a bready, sweet character on this product. Give us a shout to reserve yours today! If your plan is to brew a hurricane relief beer with it, all the better.

Biodiversity is characteristic of resilient, self-reliant ecosystems that minimize dependency on external inputs to thrive. Where a wide range of plants, animals, insects, and microbial organisms are present, a naturally balanced cycle of life plays out above and below the ground, regenerating ecological health. Whether in the context of a field, pasture, vineyard, orchard, forest, etc., it’s always about bringing together the entire community of species, humans too, in partnership to support an abundant succession of life from the ground up. Adopting regenerative farming four years ago, Waitrose & Partners’ Leckford Estate in Hampshire grows grapes and fruit to make private label wines, juices, and ciders it sells across its 300+ locations. At Leckford Estate, you will see thick vegetation under their trees and vines—floral diversity to attract pollinators, armor on the soil to retain moisture and help nutrients and microbial life cycle in the soil. The farm minimizes tillage and input applications, to not disturb soil aggregates or water infiltration. Waitrose is planning a permanent Centre of Excellence there, offering tools, workshops and other resources to support and promote UK regenerative agriculture. And now they are the first vineyards and orchards in the UK to be certified regenerative through Regenified. The apple and pear orchards aren’t just a first for the UK, but in all of Europe. They are leading by example, as they have for 120 years and counting—showing British consumers, growers, and supply chain partners how quality is built from the ground up.

What do consumers really know and care about when it comes to regenerative agriculture today? We commissioned an in-depth study to find out. And today we are sharing what we learned. Download 'Exploring Consumer Appetite for Regenerative Agriculture: Regenified’s 2024 Consumer Report' on our website to see it all for yourself. https://lnkd.in/dyn7QVqa The data reveals essential insights for regenerative farmers, retailers, brands, and supply chain partners. Here's a taste: ➡ A critical subset of consumers are hungry for regenerative products, willing to pay a premium, and will go out of their way to find them. ➡ Awareness for regenerative agriculture is rising fast, and shoppers catch on easily when a credible source explains the basics—becoming “extremely interested.” ➡ Accessibility is a barrier. 74% of Values-Based Shoppers are likely to buy regenerative products, but 40% can't find them in their area or the stores where they shop. Learn more about these and other findings in the full report. https://lnkd.in/dyn7QVqa

To scale the regenerative movement, farmers need strong allies throughout the supply chain. They need brands willing to open the path for consumers to experience certified regenerative ingredients. Brands sharing a common cause with growers, retailers, and logistical partners to ensure trust, transparency, and environmental stewardship are grounded in the products we use everyday. Brands like Pacha Soap Co. , partnering with smallholder farmers to direct-source Certified Regenified palm kernel oil, sunflower oil, and shea butter. We love this video from Whole Foods Market, tracing the journey from Kansas to West Africa to produce the world’s first regenerative bar soap. https://lnkd.in/g59FpK5U

Regenerative agriculture is rooted in a simple idea: healthier soil leads to healthier food, healthier people, and a healthier planet. It starts with farmers and ranchers making the choice to work in synchrony with nature, focusing on soil health to grow nutrient-rich crops and raise animals on pasture. But it takes more than farmers to make this shift happen. Supply chain partners and brands play a key role in ensuring that regenerative products reach consumers who increasingly care about how their food is produced. In fact, a recent consumer study we commissioned found that 74% of shoppers are interested in buying regeneratively raised food—proof that the demand is there, and it’s growing. Companies like Western Foods are leaning in to make this possible. As a leader in gluten-free grains and flours, and now as a Certified Regenified partner, Western Foods is helping regenerative farmers scale, ensuring they have a reliable partner to process their crops and bring them to market.

Who’s ready to dig deep into the future of farming and food? We’re counting the days until the annual return of the Roots Conference—September 16-17 in Huron, Ohio—hosted by The Chef's Garden, Inc. The theme for Roots 2024 is REINVIGORATE, exploring the principles of regenerative agriculture and how they parallel our lives and our organizations. Regenified co-founder Gabe Brown will deliver the keynote address to conference attendees made up of farmers, agricultural experts, culinary industry leaders, and sustainability advocates committed to enacting positive change in how we grow and consume food. Additionally, our own Richard Tufton will be moderating an expert panel on integrating livestock to benefit soil health (leading to healthier plant and animal production and higher nutrient density). This will be an impactful and inspiring event, and we are honored to be a part of it. To learn about Roots 2024 speakers, topics, agenda, and more, visit https://lnkd.in/gCfZq_b7 #Roots2024
