Regenerative agriculture is rooted in a simple idea: healthier soil leads to healthier food, healthier people, and a healthier planet. It starts with farmers and ranchers making the choice to work in synchrony with nature, focusing on soil health to grow nutrient-rich crops and raise animals on pasture. But it takes more than farmers to make this shift happen. Supply chain partners and brands play a key role in ensuring that regenerative products reach consumers who increasingly care about how their food is produced. In fact, a recent consumer study we commissioned found that 74% of shoppers are interested in buying regeneratively raised food—proof that the demand is there, and it’s growing. Companies like Western Foods are leaning in to make this possible. As a leader in gluten-free grains and flours, and now as a Certified Regenified partner, Western Foods is helping regenerative farmers scale, ensuring they have a reliable partner to process their crops and bring them to market.

Who’s ready to dig deep into the future of farming and food? We’re counting the days until the annual return of the Roots Conference—September 16-17 in Huron, Ohio—hosted by The Chef's Garden, Inc. The theme for Roots 2024 is REINVIGORATE, exploring the principles of regenerative agriculture and how they parallel our lives and our organizations. Regenified co-founder Gabe Brown will deliver the keynote address to conference attendees made up of farmers, agricultural experts, culinary industry leaders, and sustainability advocates committed to enacting positive change in how we grow and consume food. Additionally, our own Richard Tufton will be moderating an expert panel on integrating livestock to benefit soil health (leading to healthier plant and animal production and higher nutrient density). This will be an impactful and inspiring event, and we are honored to be a part of it. To learn about Roots 2024 speakers, topics, agenda, and more, visit https://lnkd.in/gCfZq_b7 #Roots2024

Why do regenerative farmers and ranchers want to keep “armor” on their soil at all times? Especially in the hotter months, it's about shielding the bare ground from heating up and drying out under direct sun. Armor can take the form of cover crops, livestock-trampled or roller-crimped grass, or decaying plants—serving as a protective layer to protect microbial life when temperatures rise. Ideal soil temperature to support microbial growth is in the 70° F range, but on a hot day, without armor between the ground and the sun to slow down evaporation, surface soil temps can quickly get above ~140° F, at which point they become essentially pasteurized. The soil microbiome can’t survive in that hot and dry of an environment. To illustrate the principle of armor in practice, take a look at these images shared with us by Benina Burroughs Montes of Burroughs Family Farms. On a recent summer day in Denair, California, Montes used an infrared thermometer to measure the surface temperature of the armor bearing the brunt of the sun’s rays (see image on the left). The armor temp read 131.9°. But underneath the armor, her soil was only 92.7° (see image on the right). That’s a remarkable 39.2° difference due to the presence of armor shielding the ground from the direct sun. The benefits of armor on soil are numerous: beyond moderating the effects of peak temperatures in both hot and cold seasons, armor enables greater moisture retention, curbs wind and water erosion, suppresses the germination of weeds, and provides habitat for animal life above and below the surface.  Building and using armor is one of the soil health principles we evaluate within our verification standards to help farmers and ranchers measure progress on their regenerative path—and help consumers trust that certified regenerative products trace back to verified practices and outcomes that improve soil health.
