This past Election Day, Mental Health Matters Bartholomew County — specifically Cheryl Buffo and I — engaged in a significant Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) session with our county’s law enforcement and emergency service agencies. The session created a unique opportunity for community members, police officers, sheriffs, and firefighters to unite, fostering empathy and understanding regarding mental health and substance use challenges. I personally experienced a pivotal moment in my career by leading discussions in front of first responders for the first time. This initiative aimed to bridge gaps and strengthen partnerships with those on the front lines. A special acknowledgment is extended to our community and law enforcement partners for their commitment to understanding and assisting individuals within our neighborhoods. The Mental Health Matters Bartholomew County Team had the privilege of speaking at the Community Impact Symposium, hosted by the Putnam County Community Foundation at the DePauw University’s Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics.
