Cultivating public life.

About us

Realms play a consequential role in city life. Be they public or private, they render how we experience a city--working, living, and playing. As landscape architects practicing in Los Angeles, a metropolis with no singular center, we have come to champion the assemblage of granular urban landscapes. These are spaces in between, connecting transit, street, work, home and recreation together. They better resolve the ground plane and turn messy middles into new realms where urban life is on display. These landscapes transect scale, urban ecology, and spatial experience. Their success beckons for the creation of another such landscape thereby fostering a more contiguous pedestrian realm. RELM is a landscape architecture and urban design practice honing the past 30 years of practice into a new studio dedicated to urbanism, connectivity, and design. Our ethos is simple--capture the wonder in between. In sequence, our landscapes engender a more urban LA and beyond, be it along the street, or within a plaza, urban park, or campus. Our projects cultivate community, resolve incongruent uses and access, and drive public life.

RELM collaborated on the master plan and completed the first site programming of the former KorPine Milling site in Bend, OR. The 33-acre campus looks to establish a vibrant, pedestrian focused community that links to surrounding neighborhoods and the river. The first phase of the development is a boutique hotel that seeks to leverage its prominent location and establish itself as a civic destination – as much through its ground floor program, as well as expansive new public spaces. The plaza, embodying the unique experience of a clearing in the woods will establish itself as the heart of the district, fostering all manner of events, gatherings and celebration. Guest amenities draw inspiration from mountain hot springs, redefining the hotel pool deck experience. . . @10sb_architects #RELM_LA #landscapearchitecture #urbanism #urbanplanning #bendoregon #civicdesign #hospitalitydesign #kennedywilsonproperties

Resolving nested bus and pedestrian traffic is essential if a major redevelopment at the MARTA Dunwoody station in Northern Atlanta is to occur. RELM, in collaboration with @hksarchitects, @hraadvisors, @perimeter_atl, and @atlantamarta, studied the station and its surrounding neighborhood, investigating the feasibly of turning the transit hub into a civic-centered, mixed-use development. RELM was charged with creating a compelling open space program to support such use. By resolving circulation into and around the site, we transformed a vehicular-focused transit plaza into an expansive public open space flexible to support year-round programming. We also re-envisioned a storm event spillway into a terraced greenspace, accessible to the surrounding neighborhood.     RELM Founding Principal Scott D. Baker presents our master plan proposal for Dunwoody Station this Monday, September 16th in a panel discussion entitled, Centering the Edge: Suburbia Redefined at the @aspireexperience in Asheville, NC.       #RELM_LA  #landscapearchitecture  #transitorienteddevelopment  #urbangreenspace  #mixeduse  #atlanta

8850 Sunset Boulevard, a mixed-used project at the intersection of Sunset and San Vincente Boulevards, was approved by West Hollywood’s City Council Monday night. Sitting at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains and perched above the LA Basin below, the project celebrates the vista condition, offering commanding views of the city and ocean alike. Importantly the project design includes a fully-accessible, public garden off Sunset. The storied boulevard is known for frontages, not gathering spaces, and this immersive garden invites all to enjoy West Hollywood’s iconic hillside terraces.   Underpinning RELM’s design celebrating hillside topography are demonstration habitats that educate the public on the role native soils play in slope stabilization and regenerative ecologies. Observation decks are directly inserted to the habitat gardens that terrace down San Vincente, educating educate users about soil, plant, and food ecosystems through physical and digital interactive signage.     @arquitectonicaGEO  @mgmtpartners  @8850sunset  @officeuntitled  @theviperroom  #silvercreekdevelopment  #RELM_LA  #landscape architecture  #urbangreenspace  #mixeduse  #westhollywood

Community placemaking is at the heart of RELM’s design for the recently opened May Lee State Office Complex in Sacramento. The largest undertaking by @DGSCALIF to date—designed for 5,000 government employees—is envisioned to spur economic development in Sacramento’s River District. Consisting of four high-performance office towers and a parking structure, the 17-acre open space extends into the surrounding urban fabric: it’s not an island unto itself. The central plaza feels welcoming to one individual or a 1,000 gathered for a community event. The design accommodates a range of users and programmatic uses. Importantly, the landscape is highly performative. Our riparian planting design will offset heat island and treat onsite storm water while still being seasonally vibrant year-round. We look forward to watching planting grow in. May Lee will be RELM’s first SITES accredited project and is the largest all-electric, zero-carbon building complex in the U.S. . #RELM_LA #landscapearchitecture #urbannature #mayleestateofficecomplex
