Why “Right to Repair” Should Matter to Healthcare The recent USA Today article on McDonald’s ice cream machines underscores a critical issue—when businesses rely on proprietary repair solutions, they face delays, increased costs, and service inefficiencies. McDonald’s franchisees have long been locked into repair contracts, unable to service equipment on their own, until now. Imagine applying this to healthcare. When hospitals, EMS, and other healtcare providers are limited by similar constraints on medical equipment, it can lead to life-threatening delays and financial burdens on providers. Enabling trained third party, qualified technicians to perform repairs on essential medical devices would not only lower costs but also increase response time and service uptime, directly benefiting patient care.
