What happens when a publisher rejects papermill articles? The papermill will keep resubmitting fake articles to multiple journals until they are published. Whether you're a large publisher or a small society publisher, any journal can be targeted by problematic articles. Plus, we've improved several existing signals to reduce false positives. Did you know that a significant number of #retractions in scholarly publishing are problematic conference proceedings? A recent article published in Nature by Christine Ro (https://lnkd.in/eaAER8hi) offers valuable insights on how to identify predatory conferences, one of the key sources of these problematic conference papers polluting the scholarly record However, fake submissions happen across the board and often target reputable conferences. Some publishers are particularly vulnerable to this issue, facing an influx of fake or fraudulent submissions disguised as legitimate conference papers. The lighter editorial processes often associated with conference proceedings, compared to the often more rigorous review for journal articles, further heighten this risk to those publishers. At Signals, we understand the challenges publishers face with problematic conference proceedings. A super interesting article was published in Nature this week that argues for more transparency and efficiency in handling retractions. The points raised are crucial if we are to address large-scale publishing integrity issues and create a more trustworthy scholarly record where retractions and corrections are seen as part of a healthy scholarly ecosystem. 🔴 At Signals, we think a lot about these challenges. While updates to COPE guidelines would be a step in the right direction, we understand from publishers that the retraction process is often slow and difficult, requiring coordination among several (sometimes non-cooperative) stakeholders. 🟡 Publishers are frequently blamed for the lack of action, but we believe the research community needs more efficient workflows to help manage the large-scale issues currently facing the industry. Increasing transparency around the retraction workflows will also inform the community about potential issues in research articles, and provide visibility of the bottlenecks in the process. 🟢 We’re keen to discuss these challenges and explore potential solutions.
