At a time when budgets are tighter than ever, state and local governments are looking for ways to maximize impact without compromising core services. Our Senior Product Strategist, Chris Fabian recently shared insights at a National Association of Counties (NACo) webinar with Florida’s Collier County Commissioner Chris Hall, and the interest was clear: PBB is a game-changer. PBB isn’t just about moving numbers around; it’s about strategic alignment: 📈 Aligning budgets with community priorities, ensuring every dollar goes towards high-impact initiatives. 🔍 Evaluating programs holistically across departments, empowering leaders to make data-driven decisions. 🤖 Leveraging AI and machine learning to bring new levels of insight to budgeting and resource allocation. Instead of slashing budgets, PBB encourages creative solutions, from partnerships to fee-based programs, helping departments become financially resilient while still meeting community needs. 2024 has brought more devastating floods, hurricanes, and destruction to our communities. It's time for cities and towns to step up and prioritize the fight against these climate impacts. Priority Based Budgeting (PBB) provides a roadmap for local governments to allocate resources where they matter most—protecting people, infrastructure, and the environment. By focusing on the highest-impact solutions, PBB empowers communities to invest in resilience and recovery efforts that drive meaningful change. It’s not just about budgets; it’s about building a safer, sustainable future.

Congratulations to the City of Fort Worth and The FWLab for the progress made on city initiatives, including for Priority Based Budgeting. We’re excited to partner with the city to help make its vision a reality.
In February 2023, David Cooke, City Manager of the City of Fort Worth, began a quest for his city to "the best managed city in the country.” About a year ago, we at Barrett and Greene Inc. wrote a column about Fort Worth's quest for Route Fifty, outlining eight major initiatives the city had launched to reach that ambitious goal, suggesting that it was heading in the right direction. But optimism doesn't equal reality -- and we've complained that predictions both good or bad never get followed through on -- so we've revisited with Cooke to see how much progress the city has actually made. In this B&G Report, we bring readers up to date (spoiler alert: There's a long way to go, but things are looking pretty darn good!) Priority-Based Budgeting (PBB) reshapes traditional budgeting by creating a common language for government leaders and stakeholders. It evaluates initiatives based on their importance and impact, promoting a shift toward program-focused decision-making. By moving away from line-item analysis to a more comprehensive, holistic view, PBB enables better decision-making that delivers the best outcomes for communities. Interested in learning more? Climate change is already impacting regions worldwide, and the effects will only intensify going forward. In North America, we are regularly experiencing harsher winters, hotter summers, and extreme weather-related events, such as hurricanes, floods, droughts, wildfires, and landslides. These events have a catastrophic impact on towns and cities that aren’t designed with the infrastructure needed to handle new threats and challenges. To address rapidly changing climate conditions, local governments are adopting climate action plans that identify and adapt community goals for health and safety, economic growth, sustainable energy, and quality of life as climate-driven changes occur.
