A recent study published in the journal 'Lung' revealed that reflux can potentially lead to lung damage by triggering an immune response. When acid is aspirated into the lungs, it exposes normally hidden proteins, Collagen-V and K-α-1 Tubulin, prompting the body to produce antibodies against them. Elevated levels of these antibodies were found in many GERD patients, suggesting undetected lung damage. Interestingly, the study found no significant evidence that Sjogren’s syndrome influences GERD risk, suggesting a one-way association. This year, the theme of World Mental Health Day is Mental Health in the Workplace. Employed adults spend more time working than any other activity during their waking hours. The pHoenix score improves the distinction between normal and pathological cases and reduces ambiguity, offering an alternative approach to diagnosing GERD that addresses the limitations of using total acid exposure time or the DeMeester Score. After recognizing that the standard threshold of pH 4 was not sensitive enough to detect reflux in the oropharynx, we introduced a new scoring system for pharyngeal pH testing called the RYAN Score in 2009. Then we further refined our a quantitative scoring system specifically for ENT populations, resulting in the Sataloff Score (2021).
