First recorded Giant Anteater twins in Argentina have been spotted in Iberá Park! Giant Anteater pups are known to ride on their mother’s backs for up to a year as they learn the skills to survive. Conservationists with Rewilding Argentina regularly record new births, but twins are extremely rare and have never been recorded anywhere in the country. @rewild partners, Rewilding Argentina and Tompkins Conservation, began reintroducing Giant Anteaters in Iberá over 15 years ago. From these #rewilding efforts there are now five different established populations spread throughout this vast wetland. These pups underscore the success to rewild Parque Ibera Corrientes into a healthy and thriving ecosystem. Giant Anteaters play a critical role in their ecosystems: by feeding on large amounts of ants, termites, and other insects, they help control their populations, and when their long tongue doesn't reach, they dig with their claws, creating watering holes that can benefit many other species. 📏 Measuring over 10 inches long, this giant millipede was rediscovered in Madagascar's Makia National Park. After being lost to science since 1897, this impressive insect was found, along with 20 other rediscoveries during a 2023 #SearchforLostSpecies expedition. Learn more : https://lnkd.in/gUJ4FJbE 🌳 Makira is the largest and most intact forest in Madagascar—and many of the species here can't be found anywhere else. Thanks to support from @ridgesfoundation this expedition successfully rediscovered 21 species that were lost to science, including flowering ant-like beetles, three small iridescent fish, five jumping spiders, and this giant millipede. 📸: Dmitry Telnov/NHM London, UK #ConservationOptimism #ReversetheRed #Madagascar @thewcs Wildlife Conservation Society American Bird Conservancy The Peregrine Fund

🦎 Field Expedition: into the heart of Madagascar's Makira Natural Park! This #SearchforLostSpecies took place in 2023, and successfully rediscovered 21 species that were lost to science, including flowering ant-like 🐜 beetles, three small iridescent 🐟 fish, five jumping 🕷 spiders, and a giant millipede that had not been documented since 1897! This was in addition to the exciting discoveries of species entirely new to science. 🌳 Makira is the largest and most intact forest in Madagascar—and many of the species here can't be found anywhere else. The expedition team included @rewild 🟢 Lost Species Officer Christina Biggs, as well as scientists from Madagascar, international scientists and local guides. Together, they surveyed rivers for lost fish, used light traps to attract and survey insects and searched the forest and rocky river beds for the recently rediscovered Dusky Tetraka. 🪶 The Search for Lost Species’ expedition to Makira was supported by the RIDGES Foundation. Forests across Madagascar are being destroyed for agriculture, logging and charcoal - conservationists fear that under-explored areas such as Makira could experience wildlife declines before scientists are able to describe and study the species that live in them. #ConservationOptimism #ReversetheRed #Madagascar Wildlife Conservation Society American Bird Conservancy BINCO The Peregrine Fund

Celebrate World Saola Day with us! 🦄 Did you know the Saola, often called the Asian "unicorn," is a Critically Endangered wild bovine species native to the Annamite mountains of Vietnam and Laos? It's known for its distinctive appearance, with two parallel horns and striking white markings on its face. Despite its nickname, it's not a mythical creature but a rare and elusive species that Re:wild and our local partners are working tirelessly to protect. With support from EU Partnerships, WWF Vietnam and Re:wild, the Saola conservation program aims to locate any remaining Saola. This rare wild cattle, first identified by scientists in 1992, has only been spotted a handful of times -- with its last documented trail camera image in 2013. Join us on our journey to find and protect this majestic animal from extinction. Together, we're not only saving a species but also preserving the unique biodiversity of the Annamite Mountains. #WorldSaolaDay #SaolaConservation #WildlifeProtection #searchforlostspecies #endangeredspecies #lostspecies #endangered #RewildTheAnnamites

A recent expedition searching for the Pink-headed Duck in Kachin State, Myanmar came back with news that a key survey site for the species had been destroyed by regional gold mining. While this heartbreaking finding might have deterred others, the passion and commitment of the team searching for the species, Richard Thorns and Way Lin, remains unruffled. Unconfirmed sightings have left birders and international conservation organizations hopeful that the Pink-headed Duck may still be out there in Myanmar’s dense, largely inaccessible elephant grasslands, swamps and floodplains. https://lnkd.in/g6jp7Cgt #SearchforLostSpecies #lostbirds #lostspecies

Urgent help needed: Hurricane Beryl, the earliest category 5 hurricane to ever develop in the Atlantic Ocean, has caused immense destruction on Union Island in the Caribbean—90% of homes there have been severely damaged or destroyed. Beryl is predicted to hit other islands in the Caribbean—one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Support hurricane relief efforts in the Caribbean via link in bio. The Union Island Environmental Alliance, a local partner of Fauna & Flora and Re:wild, has lost everything—their entire staff have lost their homes, and their office headquarters, and all the equipment they need to conduct their work has been destroyed. The Bornean elephant has been assessed as Endangered due to threats from human activities, according to today’s update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. This was its first assessment as a distinct subspecies on the IUCN Red List, which found that an estimated 1,000 Bornean elephants remain in the wild. The population has diminished over the past 75 years, initially due to extensive logging of Borneo’s forests, destroying the majority of the Bornean elephants’ habitat. Learn more https://t.ly/8tIMp
