The Recording Industry Association of America® (RIAA) followed their AI panel with “RIAA Presents Everything You Need to Know About Music Policy in One Hour.” CEO Mitch Glazier led the discussion between Stacy Baird, Senior Policy Advisor and Counsel, Sen. Maria Cantwell; Matthew Bass, Vice President, Research and Gold & Platinum Operations, RIAA; Troy Dow, VP & Counsel, Government Relations & IP Legal Policy & Strategy, The Walt Disney Company; Tyler Grimm, Chief Counsel for Policy & Strategy, U.S. House of Representatives, Judiciary Committee; Sam Kuebler, Legislative Director, Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar (FL-27); and John Riley, Assistant General Counsel, U.S. Copyright Office. Together, they discussed the No Fakes Act 2024, developed to establish federal protections for individuals' names, images, and likenesses (NIL). This act, constituting a broad right, holds firms or individuals liable for using unauthorized digital replicas of NIL without consent, extending these rights 70 years posthumously. If enacted, platforms must comply with takedown requests or face litigation, which is a crucial step up in protection for music artists where conventional rights to publicity have not been well applied. The panel also discussed broader issues like AI’s impact on intellectual property and digital rights, noting that copyright protection remains a partisan issue in Congress. While AI dominates industry discussions, achieving legislative consensus on these matters is slow due to the complexity of broader government priorities. Xin Yuan (Jin Jin) Zhou

I had the privilege of testifying before the Texas Senate last month about the importance of protecting human creators in the age of generative AI. Today, the Human Artistry Campaign released polling showing that 87% of voters support new policies to protect artists’ voices and images from unauthorized use by AI developers and 89% support policies to protect all people from unauthorized deepfakes and voice clones. There is great momentum behind the bipartisan, bicameral NO FAKES Act to get this done. https://lnkd.in/e4e2BYJe

“The music industry has supported the development of artificial intelligence as a creative tool for a long time, and over the past year I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to the discussion about how Congress should set ground rules to ensure we are protected against deepfakes and bad actors in this space." Team RIAA is so excited to see our Senior VP of Federal Public Policy Thomas Clees included in Pollstar and VenuesNow Impact: NextGen Class of 2024!
Thank you Pollstar and VenuesNow for including me in the Impact: NextGen Class of 2024! I'm honored to be on this list, and grateful for the chance to plug some Arizona bands in this issue.
