Congratulations to Dr. Karen Lozano on receiving American Chemical Society National Award for Encouraging Disadvantaged Students into the Chemical Sciences. Dr. Lozano is the Department Chair of Materials Science and NanoEngineering and a Rice Advanced Materials Institute (RAMI) affiliate member. 🦉
What a week! I’m feeling incredibly grateful and inspired after a whirlwind of meaningful moments. It started Monday at the American Chemical Society, where I had the honor of giving a lunch talk titled “Empowering Change: The Role of Mentors in Science and Community Building.” The energy in the room reminded me just how vital mentoring is to both science and society. Very grateful to the PMSE division. On Tuesday, I was deeply honored to receive the ACS National Award for Encouraging Disadvantaged Students into the Chemical Sciences. Walking the stage among brilliant scientists was humbling. A heartfelt thank you to The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation for sponsoring this award and for the opportunity to share thoughtful, inspiring conversations with their leadership team, President H. Scott Walter and Gerard Brandenstein. A special highlight: meeting a 🌟, Frances Arnold, Nobel Laureate. Midweek, I joined fellow department chairs at the University Materials Council in Vegas, where we explored the future of Materials Science. These conversations were energizing and filled with vision. By Friday, I was back in Houston for the 50th celebration of Rice University School of Engineering and Computing, two days filled with inspring talks and wonderful networking opportunities. So proud to be a Rice University alum and now a faculty member, Rice is a truly exceptional community. So many notable alumni such as Indeed CEO Chris Hyams, Unified Industries Incorporated CEO Ted Adams and many more, WOW! On Friday also honored for Dr. Humberto Terrones and future Dr. Elizabeth Fletes’ visit 😊 Still processing it all, but one thing is clear: science, mentorship, and community are deeply intertwined, and I’m so lucky to be part of it. #Gratitude #MentorshipMatters #ACS2025 #MaterialsScience #CommunityInScience #RiceAlumni #WomenInSTEM Materials Science and NanoEngineering - Rice University
