The Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) is a proactive and forward-thinking organization dedicated to the management and conservation of the Rice Creek Watershed in Minnesota. RCWD covers approximately 186 square miles of urban and rural lands in Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, and Washington counties. The area includes 28 towns, cities, and townships. We are guided by the RCWD 2020 Watershed Management Plan, a comprehensive document that outlines our vision and strategies for effective watershed management. We accomplish these goals through the following activities: Managing lakes, streams, groundwater and wetlands Monitoring water quality Promoting best management practices to improve water quality Maintaining public drainage systems Inventorying natural resources Issuing permits / inspecting construction sites Administering the Wetland Conservation Act (WCA) Educating residents about the environment and what they can to help Helping municipalities fulfill EPA mandates

We had a great time celebrating the delisting of Bald Eagle Lake with the Bald Eagle Area Association last week! We heard from RCWD staff and lake association members on the status of water quality, aquatic invasive species/native plant surveys, shoreline projects, and watershed wide projects. Many partners such as cities, counties, lake association, and homeowners have worked together to improve and protect this lake. And we’ll continue to work together to keep this lake healthy

We had an amazing turn out for the Golden Lake Celebration the other week! Many members of the community along with local leaders and partners came out to celebrate the delisting of Golden Lake off the MN Impaired Waters List. Everyone is so excited about the good work that’s been done but even more excited for the future work and partnerships to keep the lake clean and healthy for years to come!
Now is a great reminder about the importance of aquatic native plants for our lake ecosystems and water quality. Many of these plants are visible under the water or even on top (such as White Water Lily). These plants play a key role in keeping our lake ecosystems healthy, supporting fish populations, and keeping water clean and clear. These are not to be confused with "weeds" or Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS), like curly leaf pondweed, which can be a nuance for boats and hurt water quality. We created an interactive StoryMap with underwater videos and pictures to learn about these native plants and the lakes they live in. https://lnkd.in/garMtURV
Our staff was out yesterday in the Chain of Lakes (Peltier Lake and George Watch Lake) with Friends of the Mississippi River and their ESI Program for an "on the water" programming day.
