Riley County has made a commitment to retain and develop employees as part of our staffing model. One of the crucial components of retaining employees who are ready to take on the next leadership role, is making professional development a centerpiece of our culture. Not only does this strategy help us retain great employees, but also prepares us to fill future positions as needed by the organization. Last week, Commissioners approved the request to enroll two employees in the NACo High Performance Leadership Academy and send two employees to the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program in 2024. The NACo HPLA is a 12-week, online program specifically designed for county government professionals. FHRLP is a 10-session, in-person program for community leaders working to tackle the challenges facing our region. Commissioners, Department Heads, and Human Resources consistently focus efforts on the retention and growth of our current employees. These efforts to maximize workforce effectiveness will also save money by reducing turnover. We’re proud of our people and will continue to find new ways to invest in the workforce and serve the public, while focusing on good stewardship of tax dollars and a balanced approach to tax policy. RCFD#1 presented John Wienck with the prestigious Harold Bellman Award at our annual awards banquet earlier this month. This is the highest honor presented by Riley County Fire. The award, named after the late Harold Bellman, a founding member and influential figure in the department, is a testament to Wienck's outstanding dedication and service to the Riley County Fire community since first joining in 1986. John Wienck, a second-generation winner, expressed his sentiments regarding the award, saying, "First, it is a nice honor. Harold Bellman was a great man and a pioneer of Riley County Fire. Having known Harold Bellman for all my life, until he died, it is humbling to win an award dedicated to him. Second, it makes me feel pretty good as a second-generation winner. It shows the dedication my dad and I have to Riley County Fire. It is quite an honor, overall." John's father, Ivan Wienck, was presented with the Harold Bellman Award in 2003. The Wienck family has a long history of service to the department and to the community. Pat Collins, a former Riley County Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director, recalls working with both John and his father, Ivan, dating back to the late 1970s. Pat, himself a Harold Bellman Award recipient, highlights John's reliability and straightforwardness, stating, "John’s a lot like his dad. He’s always there when you need him. He’s not afraid to explain himself or tell you what he thinks, he’s up front with people, and you can count on calling John or Ivan to tell you what they think, whether you like it or not." Congratulations, John! We thank you for your many years of dedicated service and excellent leadership!
