Last night, I had the privilege of learning from Lance Winters, master distiller at St. George Spirits and multiple-time James Beard Award nominee. He took us through a guided tasting of their incredible gin lineup. Moments like these make recruiting in the distillery world such a blast!

Should Direct Reports Be Part of the Interview Process? Think Twice! Including direct reports in interviews might seem like a great way to ensure a new leader fits in with the team, but it’s a strategy that can backfire. Here’s why: 💼 Power Dynamics: Interviewing a potential boss can put subordinates in an awkward position. It’s challenging to provide honest feedback when the power balance isn’t equal, and it can lead to biased opinions based on perceived compatibility rather than capability. 🕵️♂️ Pressure to Conform: Candidates may alter their behavior or answers to appeal to the team, which can result in a less authentic assessment. So, how do you ensure a good fit without involving direct reports in the formal interview process? Here are a few alternatives: Informal Meet-and-Greets: Arrange casual coffee chats or team lunches where the candidate can interact with potential direct reports in a more relaxed setting. This allows for natural conversation without the pressure of an interview. Structured Feedback Loops: Collect input from direct reports after the meet-and-greet, focusing on how they felt about the candidate’s communication style, approachability, and potential cultural fit. Leadership Simulation Exercises: Use case studies or role-playing scenarios that mimic real work situations. Observing how the candidate handles these can provide insights into how they’ll lead the team. Finding the right leader is crucial, but it’s essential to manage the process thoughtfully. Set up properly, you can gain valuable insights without putting subordinates in a difficult position. Most importantly, make sure all parties understand the conversation is not evaluative - because it’s not an interview. #Leadership #Recruit #RiseExecutiveSearch

❄ Winter sports are around the corner! ⛷ This summer, I was elected to the board of Powdered Soul, a local non-profit that raises money that is awarded to youth athletes participating in winter sports. 🏂 💰 My kids got involved because, let's face it, winter sports are expensive! Kids donate time, or sell products at our farmer's market, and earn money that goes to winter sports fees - lift tickets, races, competitions, gear, you name it! 📺 Here's our Program Director, Maddie Williams, in a recent interview: https://lnkd.in/gSjX5AYk 🏃♀️ And, she's running for the cause! The adults raise the money, the kids give service hours to the community and earn that raised money back. It helps them appreciate their community, what work means, and how they can contribute to their own winter fun and competition. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gTPskrRe 🌨 If you are still feeling click happy, here's our website: https://lnkd.in/gh2tsVcQ 🎿 The kid in the middle with the hat is my own. She's a senior now. You may remember her from a previous post where she raised money for a local women's shelter. I guess she caught that fundraising bug! Thanks for reading. ☃

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬 🎯 In today's fast-paced talent market, great candidates don't wait around—they get scooped up. As hiring leaders, it's our job to move quickly, and with purpose. I've seen it time and again: a rockstar candidate who checks all the boxes, only to lose them because the interview process dragged on. It’s not just about speed; it’s about being intentional at every step. Here’s how: 🔍 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭: Be crystal clear on the role and what success looks like. This aligns your team and sets the right expectations with candidates. ⏱ 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: Streamline the process—pre-schedule interview slots, reduce gaps between stages, and ensure decision-makers are available. 🎯 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐭: Use each interaction to assess both skills and culture fit. Divide questions and debrief after every interview, don’t make a candidate say the same thing twice. Make the most of every minute. 🔗 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Keep candidates in the loop. Transparency builds trust and shows that you value their time as much as your own. Great candidates are in demand, and they know their worth. By moving quickly and intentionally, we not only keep them engaged but also show them we’re serious about bringing them on board. Let’s make every moment count! #Hiring #Recruitment #TalentAcquisition #Leadership #HR #RiseExecutiveSearch
