Should companies require employees to be in the office 5 days a week? This is HOT topic for sure! ❓What do you think? What have you seen and heard regarding work arrangements and employee expectations? I’d love to hear your thoughts. 💭

At the beginning of 2024, I predicted that this would be the year that companies picked a side on hybrid and remote work—and Amazon has officially chosen theirs. As Annie Palmer just reported at CNBC, Amazon will now require employees to be in the office 5 days a week. While I applaud their conviction, which is critical for business success and has served them well over the past 3 decades, there are some significant risks to this approach: 💼 Employees have come to expect flexibility. The genie is out of the bottle. A high percentage of employees now appreciate and expect hybrid work. In fact, 76% of jobs that can be done from home are remote or hybrid, according to Pew Research. A recent study that we did here at Rising Team also revealed that remote and hybrid employees rate nearly every aspect of their work more favorably. There’s a real risk that Amazon’s best talent could leave for companies offering greater flexibility. In today’s market, flexibility isn’t just a perk; it’s an expectation. 🤝 Serendipity isn’t a strategy. Before the pandemic, some may have thought in-office work was the best environment for learning and connection. But research shows that intentional approaches to growth and team effectiveness matter more than just being in the same building. Bringing people back to the office alone won’t be enough, and they acknowledge this decision is driven more by instinct than data. If Amazon truly wants to foster learning and connection, they need to be intentional about creating opportunities for that—whether teams are in the office or remote. 🛠️ Cutting layers without cutting the load. While I understand the desire for autonomy and faster decision-making, simply removing layers of management won’t guarantee that outcome. What it *does* guarantee is that managers will be juggling bigger teams and heavier workloads, which often leads to burnout. In fact, Gartner found that 75% of managers feel overwhelmed by how much their responsibilities have grown—and that they’re now handling 51% more than they can effectively manage. For this move to succeed, managers need proper support and tools. The “bureaucracy mailbox” could be a step in the right direction, though it will only be effective if they act on the feedback and make meaningful changes. It’s ironic that Amazon wants to act like the world’s largest startup, given that many startups—especially those founded during the pandemic—are now fully distributed, hybrid, or remote. Amazon may want to rethink what being a modern, agile company means in 2024. What do you think? Has the hybrid vs. in-office debate been decided for your company, or are you still navigating the decision? ------------------ Like this post?
