About us
Founded as an orphanage in 1831, Rising Ground, formerly Leake & Watts, is a leading nonprofit organization providing children, adults, and families in need with the resources and skills needed to rise above adversity and positively direct their lives. With an annual budget of $187 million and 101 programs at 138 sites throughout the New York City and lower Westchester area, we deliver dedicated support to promote safe environments for children and help families thrive through our family stabilization, family foster care and adoption programs; innovative special educational programs that advance learning from early childhood through high school; result-focused programs that help court-involved youth change the trajectory of their lives; caring services that promote independence for children and adults with developmental disabilities; and pro-active community health initiatives that foster well-being. Across programs, we continually engage new, innovative techniques and implement evidence-based models to increase our impact and promote better outcomes.

Last week Rising Ground participated in the 15th Annual Father’s Day Pledge Against Violence at City Hall. The Pledge is an opportunity for fathers, father figures, men, young men, elected officials, city activists, and community leaders to join in a call to action to end all violence. Started as a NYC event in 2010 by CONNECT - Safe Families, Peaceful Communities, the Pledge went national in 2014 and is now held in 50 cities across the U.S. Among those representing Rising Ground was Director of the Respect & Responsibility program, Alvaro Pinzon, and SVP for Diversity, Fairness, & Belonging Travis Rodgers. Erika Miller, Coordinator of the Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP) at Harry S. Truman High School, accompanied three young men from the program’s Men of Strength club to meet and engage with healthy male role models engaged in the work to end gender-based violence, as well as men who model healthy manhood.
