Wow. What an amazing RiskFlag event on Higher-risk Building Safety (HRB) cases. I was really pushed out of my comfort zone compering it! Here are the key takeaways presented by all the fabulous speakers. ❗ Safety Management Systems The importance of the Safety Management System (SMS) in managing HRB safety. There are many structures, but plan-do-check-act does work and is known to the BSR. Key points that are missing in SMS are: 📖 A way of identifying and reducing your risks – RiskFlag offers our Bow Tie tool for free with each Safety Case licence. 📖 A feedback mechanism to ensure that lessons are learnt. 📖 A way of managing people and encouraging a positive culture. This is essential. ❗ The need for a well-considered safety case structure that ensures that each safety claim and argument is supported by evidence. I’m sure that you’ve heard me say this before, but the Claim-Argument-Evidence structure works a treat! ❗ No building will be perfect! Your HRB safety case will have gaps in, but why is it still safe? There must be a clear method of dealing with the imperfections – delivery plans are essential to explaining your ‘route to green’. ❗ The Structural Argument. What should it contain? This is really important! 🏫 A clear explanation of the building use – different uses invoke different loads. 🏫 Definition of the building structure - different layouts, stability systems and materials invoke different risks. 🏫 Clear understanding of the building condition – material performance changes when materials deteriorate. 🏫 Any history of problems – repairs and why the repairs were needed. 🏫 Definition of how the structural components are protected from fire. 🏫 Remember that the BSR has already defined the required scenarios that must be considered in your safety case link. 🏫 Competency!! Who has done the assessment of structural failure and why are they competent! Keep an eye out for our next event, as we collate more feedback from the BSR. What I do know is that the RiskFlag cloud based platforms are allowing clients to efficiently develop and manage their HRB safety cases, reducing time and effort for already stretched teams. Get in touch if you'd like to learn more! RiskFlag - 'we know safety cases!'

Proposed event for us all to share feedback from the BSR on our Safety Case Reports. London based initially, but we could take it around the country if there is interest. Before booking a room Royal Aeronautical Society, I would like to gauge numbers on who can attend on Tuesday 24th September please? Agenda to be developed. However, it will start with RiskFlag presenting our 'common issues seen' when supporting 45+ organisations around the country developing HRB safety cases. My intent is that organisations (LAs, Housing Associations etc) will then provide their experiences / feedback. This learning will be invaluable to all and ensure that we are all following best practice. Many thanks!

At RiskFlag we want to ensure that all clients are provided with the latest best practice in understanding their risk picture and developing safety cases. We will therefore be running a series of webinars, starting this Friday, 12th July at 9am (BST). Whilst this initial webinar is aimed at our Higher-risk Building (HRB) clients, it is also relevant for our users from other industries, such as aerospace. The Building Safety Act requires the Principal Accountable Person (PAP) to understand and manage their risks. But what are the available techniques for doing this? RiskFlag partner Ben Mark will run an introduction to bow tie analysis, focusing on the basics of a bow tie diagram, and how the technique can be used to model HRB risks. The following webinars in the series will build on this initial webinar, showing how RiskFlag’s new Bow Tie module can be used to understand risks and barriers, and how Bow Tie content can be integrated within a safety case. Please email the address in the comments to receive a registration link. Many thanks.

RiskFlag had a great 3 days at Housing 2024. Thank you to everybody who visited our stand and attended our HRB Safety Case workshop. After talking with many clients and reviewing more safety case reports, here are our latest observations of how to improve the Safety Cases for your HRBs. 1. A HRB Safety Case is not just about compliance to regulations, building regulations, for example. The Safety Case must demonstrate that you have done everything that you reasonably can to lower the risk, and the risk that you are left with is worth it for the benefit that you derive from the activity. 2. We have seen many Safety Cases that have been produced without a prior understanding of the risks associated with the HRB. You must have a way of identifying risks and things to reduce risk, often called 'barriers'. Remember that the Safety Case Report must include a Risk Assessment and Management of Risks summary. 3. The difference between a Safety Case and a Safety Case Report is still not well understood. As defined by the BSR: 'the safety case report is a document that summarises the building’s safety case'. The Safety Case Report is a snapshot in time, it is only valid for the time and date that it was issued. Each HRB must have a live Safety Case. 4. Organisations often tend to start their Safety Case by collecting evidence first. This is wrong! Once you understand your risk, construct your safety claims and arguments. This will then inform what evidence you need for your HRB Safety Case. This will save you money and time, as you will not need to commission unnecessary evidence collection, additional surveys, for example. 5. It's ok not to have a perfect safety case! But, you must articulate in the Safety Case your action plan as to how you will gather the required evidence. Whilst you wait for the evidence, you must explain in the Safety Case why you believe that the HRB is still safe to occupy i.e. what are your short-term mitigations. Let's all learn from each other! If you're developing HRB Safety Cases, then please post your thoughts / observations in the comments.

We're so excited at RiskFlag. RiskFlag BowTie (RiskFlagBT) has joined the RiskFlag suite of safety management modules. You can now assess and manage your risk in the same ecosystem as your safety case. There is even more good news! Existing RiskFlag clients get RiskFlagBT free for the term of your contract! As it is cloud-based, we have enabled the module for all existing clients. New clients will also get RiskFlagBT for free until 31 Oct, with every purchase of a RiskFlag Safety Case (RisFlagSC) licence. We have written release notes and it is simple to use, but we will be holding a webinar in the coming weeks to demonstrate how to use RiskFlagBT! Fantastic work by the RiskFlag development team. Thank you! Get in touch for a demo!
