A huge shout out to RIT's PPC Student Design Challenge team for their 2nd place award yesterday at the Paperboard Packaging Council's Fall Leadership Conference in Atlanta. Each year, the Paperboard Packaging Council develops a different design challenge, and universities compete by applying design, material, and technology solutions in creating an innovative package. RIT's entry was one of three finalists selected from among 20 teams representing five universities. RIT's team was comprised of: Malena Juif, a third-year packaging science student, Nicole Wright, ’24 (graphic design); Lucy Rose Miles, ‘24, (graphic design); Nathaniel Cardiel ’24 (graphic design); and Mackenzie Gidusko ’24 (graphic design). Last week, Tim Clancy from Konica Minolta Sensing Americas, Inc. came to RIT and presented a lecture about Hyperspectral Imaging to our students. Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) is a relatively new analysis technique that combines imaging and spectroscopy. It is extremely fast, non-contact, non-destructive and can be scaled up to inline mass production processes. There are many useful applications in packaging, printing, sustainability and environmental sciences. HSI is widely used in food science and packaging, and can detect contamination, bruising, defects (seals, leaks, etc.) Other examples of HSI applications include identifying and sorting different (micro) plastics, analyzing food products through packaging, determining moisture content, detecting product contamination and identifying contaminants. We always appreciate industry experts coming to RIT and exposing our students to advanced instrumentation and applications. Our Digital Print Processes class recently got an up close look at an HP Indigo 7500 in RIT's Printing Applications Lab. MAAT 541 provides students with an in-depth understanding of Toner, Inkjet, Liquid Electrophotography, Dye Sublimation and other digital printing methods. Offered each fall semester, it is an important class to prepare our students for entering print and graphic media professions, as well as conducting research on digital printing applications.
