RIVERA Initiatives Inc., a 501(c)(3)-recognized Private Foundation for Academic and Scientific cause, is pleased to announce the successful completion of the RIVERA+ Corporate Experience Award-sponsored trip, which included visits to key nodes within the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine ecosystem. The itinerary included engagement with our network in the Penn Cancer Biology program, the Cell and Molecular Biology Program, the Biochemistry Program, and the Computational Sciences Program. This lean experience-based award was designed to (1) significantly bolster the academic network of an outstanding #stem #student in our undergraduate student cohort and (2) expose them to regional #biotech #corporate activities beyond that which is found in structured programs. Through our collaboration with genos.bio, an Ozcorp Scientific portfolio company, we were able to sponsor riveraomics.org student Sebastián A. Rosario-Torres. Sebastian visited globally-competitive biomedical research labs at the Penn Institute for RNA Innovation, participated in the SUIP Poster Session, and contributed to targeted solicitation activities conducted with regional biotech firms. These activities have further strengthened our network ties and opened new avenues for research and development activities within our frameworks. RIVERA Initiatives Inc. extends sincere thanks to Sebastián, genos.bio, Ozcorp Scientific, University of Pennsylvania, all our network of partners, and most of all, our private initial donors for the pilot funding to support the making of an impactful hyper-concentrated experience for an outstanding student. We will be releasing information about the future iterations of the award granting procedures in our Foundation's blog post. Importantly, to be eligible for this award you must be a US-based undergraduate student actively performing research through one of our two current branch academic research groups riveraomics.org | riveraquant.org. Thank you again Sebastián A. Rosario-Torres! #capacitybuilding #careerdevelopment

Several of our students have amazing ongoing projects. The Foundation congratulates: - Emmanuel F. in being admitted to UAMS College of Pharmacy. He successfully navigated the pressure and performed exceptionally well during the interview round. Emmanuel was the first student to approach Dr. Osvaldo D. R. when he began teaching an afternoon section of Cell Molecular Biology at Universidad Ana G. Méndez (UAGM). The Foundation thanks Emmanuel for demonstrating his commitment to personal growth. - Damian Santiago in embarking as an independent coder with one web development project already in hand. Damian is also contributing to in-network bioinformatics projects, producing beautiful plots and preliminary data towards the end of his semester research training. Thank you also Damian for your exceptional contributions throughout the semester in coordinating efforts and representing our research group riveraomics.org at local seminars, workshops and activities. - Alejandra Bandelier Marzán in her commitment to the clinic, providing intel for the group about available connections and opportunities. Alejandra has been racking up shadowing experiences since 2021, from working with neuro-surgeons, podiatry surgeons, maxillofacial surgeon, general surgeons (you see the trend here). Alejandra has also committed time to volunteering to Recreational Therapy at the VA system. Alexandra is on official MCAT preparatory timeline, all of this while at the end contributing to writing paper on molecular mechanisms of RNA. - Ian Berrios in engaging with the clinical industry, currently navigating several interviews, and engaging with our Foundation about his experience in the clinical labor market. Ian has also demonstrated exceptional commitment to the laboratory environment by helping coordinate efforts for the wetlab Cell Biology course. Thank you Ian! Ian is also on official MCAT preparatory timeline. - José Ignacio Reyes Gonzalez, BS in beginning to engage with the biotech industry, demonstrating independence in seeking out opportunities. José is also currently navigating several interviews and on official MCAT preparatory timeline. - Carla Cintron (not on LinkedIn yet) on demonstrating a commitment to aging biology, developing a unique commercial landscape analysis project and embarking on scientific careers beyond the lab and clinic. Excited for the submission for publication of Carla's work! The riverainc.org Private Foundation thanks you all for your exceptional contributions and commitment to academic growth. Stay tuned for more updates! #science #academia #puertorico #rivera #foundation

Scientist (PI) | Creator & Speaker for Academia | ex-Stanford

Finally!!! 1. NSF requires that professors submit a mentoring plan for PhD students! 2. A PI is required to CERTIFY that PhD students and postdocs have active individual development plans (IDP) when funded by NSF. NSF is one of the major science funding agencies in the US. “Future STEM talent is a valuable national resource, and we cannot squander the opportunity to prepare that talent to persist in STEM,” - Sylvia Butterfield (deputy assistant director for NSF’s Directorate for STEM Education) 📍 Per NSF Guide, examples of mentoring activities include: - career counseling - training in preparation of proposals - publications and presentations - guidance on ways to improve teaching and mentoring skills - training in responsible professional practices - guidance on how to effectively collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds and disciplinary areas Now, a PI will have to think about: - “How will you clearly communicate your mentoring philosophy, working environment and culture, policies and other important considerations to a mentee working with you and your team?” - “What steps can you take to promote a work culture where mentees feel valued and supported and to foster a sense of belonging as an authentic member of the team?” ❗Moreover, the plan is part of funding evaluation! It’s not just an additional document. #research #PhD #university #mentoring
