About us
About Us Our Beliefs A college education is expensive enough – your rent shouldn’t be. With the price of higher education continuing to increase year after year, we’ve held steadfast to the belief that quality student housing should be accessible for all. We also believe that housing should empower students, not financially overburden them. This is why we wholeheartedly support the cooperative housing model. And while the trend around campus has been the new construction of “luxury” apartment buildings with sky-high rents, we remain committed to fostering the ideals of cooperative housing and supporting the buildings we manage in a way that enables each co-op to provide quality, affordable housing to students at the U of M and other schools in the area. Our Mission To develop and maintain quality student-oriented housing communities operating on a nonprofit, democratic basis. Our History From its beginning in 1945 as the Chateau Co-op Dining Club, the nonprofit organization now known as Riverton Community Housing has served many thousands of students of the University of Minnesota and nearby colleges by making the pursuit of their educational goals more accessible. With shifting market conditions and the growing need for affordable housing in the late 1960’s – early 1970’s, the student-run board of directors worked with multiple public and private partners to replace the dining co-op with 127 apartments. Thus the 20-story Chateau Student Housing Cooperative was born; the first students moved in for the start of classes in the fall of 1973. The Chateau was so successful that there has been a waiting list ever since the doors opened. To expand the amount of member-controlled affordable housing, the Chateau board formed a “parent” nonprofit organization. Four more housing cooperatives and a rental townhome community have been added since 1995, putting the current total number of housing units at 434.

While we know the world's largest peace pole sticks out in the community, that is the point! We want to catch people's eye and have them wonder what "May peace prevail on earth" means to them. Located in the Como neighborhood, this transformed grain elevator at Brook Avenue Housing Co-op is more than a mural – it's a beacon of unity and a celebration of our shared humanity. The words, displayed in six languages, reflect the diversity of our city and the universal longing for peace. As a community-driven organization, Riverton was proud to partner in creating this iconic Peace Pole. It stands as a reminder that even amidst differences, we can find common ground and work towards a more harmonious world. At Riverton Community Housing, we believe in creating spaces where neighbors become like family. Our recent garden party at Franklin Housing Co-op was the perfect example of this in action! With delicious local eats, from Ethiopian dishes to classic pizza and pasta, there was something for every taste bud. The kids had a blast with face painting, balloon animals, and bubbles galore, while adults enjoyed quality time with neighbors. We were excited to have HOURCAR join us, sharing insights on the car-sharing program coming to Franklin this Fall. It's partnerships like these that enhance our community's lifestyle. At Riverton, we're not just a place to live – we're a community where you can put down roots. Our cooperative living spaces in Minneapolis foster connection and a real sense of belonging. Very happy to share the completed first phase of the mural project, “Higher and Higher” that I had the pleasure of consulting + project managed. This project was lead by the wonderful student cooperative of the Chateau building in Dinkytown. It was painted by the fantastic Jacqui Rosenbush and local community members though a series of painting engagement events. You can see how massive, bright, and brilliant this first iteration of the work is on this building. Fingers crossed for funding for phase II the goal is to go higher and higher all the way to the top of this 22 story building! Thanks to Gunnar Carlson, MPA for being such a wonderful collaborator, Marcy Holmes Neighborhood association, the student community of Univeristy of Minnesota. and too Riverton Community Housing ⭐️

As we mark our nation's birthday, we're grateful for the community that Riverton Community Housing calls home. Just as our founding veterans envisioned when they established Riverton in 1945, our cooperatives are a place where neighbors become like family. Today, we celebrate the freedom to come together, to build connections, and to create lasting memories. Whether you're enjoying a backyard BBQ, watching fireworks, or simply taking in the joy of the day, we hope your 4th is filled with warmth and laughter. From our Riverton family to yours, Happy Independence Day! #IndependenceDay #4thOfJuly #CelebrateTogether

The State of Minnesota made history when Governor Walz signed the Cooperative Housing Act into law last month. This new legislation will make it easier to form and fund housing cooperatives, which we know empower residents, promote inclusivity, and ensure financial sustainability. At Riverton Community Housing, we believe quality housing is a right, not a privilege, and this law aligns perfectly with our goal of expanding cooperative housing options. The Cooperative Housing Act clarifies the process for forming a cooperative and unlocks funding specifically for cooperatives. This is a huge win for the communities we serve. We're grateful to the Northcountry Cooperative Foundation for leading the charge on this issue and to all the partners who collaborated to make the law a reality. Amidst the rapid increase in housing development near the University of Minnesota campus, we see an opportunity to differentiate ourselves. Unlike many out-of-state and hard-to-reach landlords and property management groups, our office is always open, and our team is ready to serve. We're excited to seize the opportunities this law creates to build more equitable and sustainable housing.
