October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but security is fundamental to our work at Rivian every day. Last weekend at our software lab in Palo Alto, we hosted a security hackathon that brought together researchers from around the globe to test the security of our vehicles, for the ultimate good of our owners. The group represented some of the most skilled researchers in the field, and a few return guests. Rivian was proud to be a sponsor of DEFCON’s car hacking village this year, where we hosted a “capture the flag” competition, and the winners joined in on this event. As our Rivian team prepares for the Grace Hopper Celebration this year, we can't help but think back on the incredible people we met last year. One of those standout individuals was Valerie Fernandes, a Toronto-based software engineering student at the University of Waterloo. Valerie joined us for a summer #software internship working on our full-stack development team. We caught up with her just as her summer #internship was ending to hear how it went.    "It’s always been important to me to work on something that’s impactful to people. And in this case, I had the chance to benefit both my coworkers and our owners!” Valerie spent the summer building a communications system that empowers our service centers and field teams to instantly send urgent alerts to vehicle owners, ensuring timely and effective communication.  “I feel like I’ve been able to contribute so much!” she said, “I got to meet with the team of technicians who were actually going to be using this tool in their workflow, receive feedback, and see the project through to launch. Experiencing the end-to-end process was really cool.”     “No matter what industry you work in, there’s software driving interactions and processes beneath the surface,” mused Valerie. “To me, software is endlessly intriguing and inspiring in that way, since it means, with only a few keystrokes, you can create something that solves a problem or improves someone’s life. Despite its three-month length, I found this to be true even in a summer internship at Rivian.” Writing software at Rivian is intrinsically bigger than oneself. “I was definitely excited when we launched the Gen 2 R1’s! It’s fulfilling to see the vehicles in the wild knowing that I contributed to that. It felt like not only a milestone for Rivian, but also one for me, because I resonate with the mission of the company – one of inspiration and optimism around sustainability – so, contributing to a company that's working towards a more sustainable future gives my work deeper meaning and satisfaction.”    “I love that Rivian and I found each other at Grace Hopper.
