Suicide Prevention Month: How We Help Our Employees At RK, the safety of our employees is our #1 priority—and this goes beyond just physical health. We care about our employees’ emotional and mental well-being, and suicide prevention efforts are just one way we work to keep them safe. Let’s take a look at how RK helps with #SuicidePrevention and a few ways we support our employees. How RK Works to Keep Our Employees Safe: Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available at no cost to our employees and offers a range of services, including confidential counseling, financial planning and more. According to https://ow.ly/AaKi50T7PLu, only 26% of people are willing to seek mental health care. Yet during an internal survey, RK employees answered that over 50% were willing to seek care. This shows our efforts to reduce the stigma around mental health, particularly for men, are truly making an impact. We provide leadership and supervisor safety training specifically geared toward suicide prevention and mental health to ensure all employees have a safe outlet to discuss personal issues or concerns. We currently have over 300 employees trained as mental health first responders. As a result of these efforts, we were able to avert five suicides in 2023. RK is committed to being on the frontlines of mental health support, whether that’s providing EAP resources at our new hire orientations or placing stickers with QR codes on our hard hats for quick and easy access. Suicide Prevention Month: The Importance of Work-Life Balance and Following Up In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by work and personal responsibilities. Achieving a healthy balance between the two can significantly reduce stress and improve mental health, potentially saving lives. Here are some strategies to help promote work-life balance, as well as follow-up strategies for keeping the conversation open around mental health: Strategies to Promote Work-Life Balance Prioritize Self-Care: Emphasize the importance of self-care activities such as exercise, meditation and hobbies that bring joy and relaxation. Take Breaks: Remind everyone to take regular breaks during the workday to recharge and reduce stress. Communicate with Your Employer: Advocate for yourself by being open and honest with your employer about the support you need. Get Support from Family, Friends or Professionals: Lean on those around you by asking for help with day-to-day tasks or guidance on their work-life balance strategies. Follow-Up Strategies to Keep the Conversation Around Suicide Going Stay Connected: Keep in regular contact with the person, checking in on their well-being and offering a listening ear without judgment. Be Persistent: If they don’t respond immediately, don’t give up. Continue reaching out with care and patience. Sharing your own experiences with mental health struggles and recovery can be a beacon of hope for those who are contemplating suicide. Your words can provide comfort, inspire courage and offer a lifeline to those who feel lost. Here’s how you can help: Share Your Story: Talk about your experiences with mental health. Be honest and open about your struggles and the steps you’ve taken towards recovery.   Listen with Compassion: Simply being there to listen can make a huge difference. Let others know they can talk to you without fear of being judged.   Encourage Professional Help: Guide them to seek help from mental health professionals. Sharing how therapy or counseling helped you might encourage them to take that step. They can call or text #988 or reach out to 988lifeline.org to chat with a trained crisis counselor 24/7.   Offer Hope: Remind them that there is hope and things can get better. Share coping strategies that worked for you.   Be There: Consistently show up for them. Your ongoing support can provide the strength they need to keep going.
