DRIVING BUSINESS GROWTH | Last week, MIWA members in Cape Town (18 March) and Johannesburg (19 March) gained valuable insights into using data to drive growth and sustainability in their workshops. Hosted by Gunther Schmitz—Chairman of Right to Repair South Africa and SA Representative for Garage Hive South Africa—and joined online by Alex Lindley FIMI from Garage Hive, the sessions provided practical, real-world examples of how data-driven decision-making can streamline workshop operations. From workshop planning and stock management to customer online authorisation, automated surveys, and Autodata integration, attendees saw firsthand how leveraging the right tools can improve efficiency. Lindley, who owns a chain of 11 workshops in the UK, demonstrated how data can create ‘VHC’—Very Happy Customers—who, in turn, drive workshop profitability. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY | On International Women’s Day, we recognise the skill, dedication, and contributions of women in the automotive sector. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action”, is a reminder that progress towards gender equality requires ongoing commitment—and MIWA is dedicated to being part of that change. 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? Women make up less than a quarter of the automotive workforce globally, yet workshops and businesses that embrace diversity see higher productivity, innovation, and customer satisfaction. It’s time to change that. Yet, as Marta García, Executive President of Women's Worldwide Car Of The Year (WWCOTY), highlights, the industry must do more to ensure women are fully included in the automotive sector: “We need to create reference models featuring women and give them a voice. This is more important than it seems if we want to increase women’s participation in the automotive industry. There is room for women. The sector will be losing half of the available talent if it does not open its doors to them and promote their inclusion.” (Source: https://vist.ly/3mwri7q ) She also highlights that while women occupy only 25–30% of jobs in the sector worldwide, the opportunities extend far beyond engineering. From communications and logistics to sales, marketing, HR, and business management, there is room for women to excel. WALK THE TALK | Leadership in the automotive industry goes beyond technical expertise—it’s about shaping the future through action. On 1 March 2025, MIWA Chairperson Dewald Ranft and MIWA member Andrey Louwrens, alongside fellow industry professionals, took part in a 70km walk around Bloemfontein—not just as a test of endurance, but as a commitment to uplifting communities and supporting meaningful change. They walked in solidarity and faith, inspired by the story of Jericho—a reminder that breaking down barriers requires action, unity, and purpose. “Just as a brand is defined by the values of its people, we wanted to support this initiative to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to supporting and uplifting communities in a way that goes beyond just business.” said Dewald. By supporting initiatives like this, MIWA reinforces its commitment to making a real impact beyond workshops. Funds raised for the Biker’s Church in Bloemfontein will help uplift underprivileged community members, further aligning with MIWA’s values of integrity and leadership. “Through participation in meaningful initiatives like this, MIWA hopes to continue to uphold the values that set it apart—integrity, leadership, and a genuine commitment to making a difference in the communities in which it operates,” said Dewald. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the automotive industry isn’t just a checkbox—it’s an investment in people, communities, and long-term industry growth.
