Fostering value, unity, and well-being in individuals and organizations through the science of axiology.

About us

The Robert S. Hartman Institute (RSHI) is the only non-profit specifically focused on formal and applied axiological value foundations and legacy (value theory). RSHI is dedicated to harnessing the profound insights of formal axiology, the science of value, to create positive transformation in individuals and communities. We strive to empower people with the knowledge and tools necessary to make more informed and ethical decisions, cultivating a world where every individual’s intrinsic worth and contributions are recognized, respected, and enhanced. Through the principles of formal axiology, we aim to foster greater understanding, empathy, and collaboration, ultimately shaping a society that values harmony, justice, and the flourishing of all. As a global organization, our members span continents and industries from business people, leaders, executive coaches, psychologists, political scientists, economists, and philosophers.

  • Formal axiology extends beyond individuals and may be used effectively to guide an organization's strategy, align staff, build culture, and manage performance. In this three-part series, three different approaches to developing and executing corporate strategy using applied formal axiology are reviewed. In Part 1 (Sept 11th), Jonathan Ciampi explores formal axiology as a strategy canvas that is applied to healthcare. In Part 2 (Oct 9th), Peter Demarest will discuss how the concepts of applied Axiology can be used to help organizations (re)develop more meaningful and effective constitutional artifacts (purpose, vision, mission, values, etc.). In Part 3 (Nov 13th), Sheri Smith will discuss using formal axiology to align departments and staff to build a vibrant culture. REGISTER TODAY #corporatestrategy #formalaxiology #corporateculture

  • Rem was known as an embodiment of intellect and heart. He was a founding member of this Institute and also served as the founding editor of the Journal of Formal Axiology. To the Institute’s members, Rem was a friend, mentor, and scholar. Rem shared in a podcast interview in 2020 that he “became acquainted with Hartman and his work as something of an accident of history or a gift of the grace of God or whichever way you want to see it.” That acquaintance led to decades of exploration of the theory of formal axiology in addition to his specialization in Philosophy of Religion, American Philosophy, Medical Ethics, and Ethical Theory, Mental Health Care Ethics, and Ethics and Animals. He spent 33 years on the Board of Directors of RSHI from 1987 to 2010. Rem was a prolific writer and is often credited for advancing much of our working understanding of formal axiology. The board and Institute thanks Rem for his non-denumerably, infinitely valuable effort, thought, and wisdom as he contributed to this work.
