A multi-sector community collaborative with a goal to improve quality of life by reducing poverty.
About us
We used to talk primarily about being “anti-poverty.” But that made us think: What are we working toward?” We’re changing how we talk about our work—using language that is focused on solutions and based on our shared strengths. In order to create an equitable Rochester, we seek to achieve upward mobility from poverty for everyone in our community – starting with those furthest from the goal. Solving poverty differently requires defining poverty differently and recognizing that poverty is about more than just income. We’ve identified three main drivers of poverty, which means we can find three ways to uproot poverty: Dignity and Belonging Feeling the respect, dignity and sense of belonging that comes from contributing to one’s community. Power and Autonomy Control over one’s life, the ability to make choices and the collective capacity to influence larger policies and actions that affect one’s future. Economic Success Refers to factors that directly contribute to individuals’ and families’ material well-being.

RMAPI Executive Director Aqua Porter and other local leaders joined WXXI's Evan Dawson for a very important discussion on the future of Rochester and what we're doing to spread upward mobility. This live panel took place at RMAPI's 2024 Summit on Thursday, with some very thoughtful questions from our RMAPI coalition partners including our community members.

The Rochester Beacon explored the affordable housing challenges in our community and how it impacts upward mobility: “What we know is there’s a mismatch here of the housing that exists and the incomes that people have,” observes Rebekah Meyer, operations manager at Rochester Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative. “It’s obviously most pronounced for households with very low incomes that even so-called affordable housing is not affordable to them. There’s a lack of housing that’s affordable to those with the lowest incomes in our community, and particularly a lack of quality housing that they can afford.”

On Labor Day, RMAPI celebrates all the contributions of workers to make our our community strong and vibrant. In RMAPI's Unity Agenda, we envision a future where everyone engages in rewarding work that provides dignity and builds financial security and stability for their families. What does engaging in rewarding work look like? It means: --Employers pay living wages and provide benefits that enable stability. --Employers center equity in policies and practices, especially for entry and mid-level employees. --Employers address common barriers to employment. --Banking and financial systems engage residents with affordable products and services, including resources to help grow BIPOC-owned businesses. --Systems eliminate harmful fees, fines, and services that are predatory and exploitative.
