The RMSC includes the RMSC Museum & Science Center, the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium, and the RMSC Cumming Nature Center. Offering experiences at the Museum & Science Center with more than 200 interactive exhibits, Planetarium with a 65-foot dome and Nature Center on 900 acres, the RMSC stimulates community interest in exploration. In addition, the more than 1.2 million RMSC collection items tell the story of Rochester’s past including its rich history of innovation and invention. We are excited to announce the completed digitization of one of the longest-running Black newspapers in New York, "The Frederick Douglass Voice"! Howard W. Coles was the owner and editor of "The Frederick Douglass Voice". Coles served many roles in the Rochester community: a groundbreaking Black newspaper journalist, as well as a historian, author, radio broadcaster, candidate for public office, and activist. He chronicled and influenced Rochester’s 20th-century Black community by showcasing the literary, artistic, and intellectual achievements of community members. Through his publications, he documented culture, community activities, living conditions, and everyday occurrences and concerns of Rochester. His publication spanned seven decades of print (1933-1996) while lifting up and empowering citizens. There are 350 original copies of "The Frederick Douglass Voice" in the RMSC's care. This digitization project ensures the long-term preservation of these objects in the RMSC Collection as well as an opportunity to provide access to new audiences. The newspapers have served as an important primary resource for local scholars and thought leaders when researching important topics, including redlining in Rochester and racism & resistance in the 3rd Ward. Digitizing The Frederick Douglass Voice removes barriers for scholars and the general public, making this documentation of the rich cultural heritage of Rochester’s Black community more accessible to researchers. Every year, volunteers from around town take time out of their busy weeks to join us at the RMSC for one day–to beautify & refresh our campus together for United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes Day of Caring! This year, South East Area Coalition, Paychex,Wegmans Food Market at Latta Rd., the Caringbears, and a number of individuals all came together to help: Clean up the campus Mulch garden beds Plant perennials & annuals Plant new gardens (A pollinator garden, Learning Gardens, and more!) and build benches! This is a massive amount of work that helps our groundskeeping staff during the height of a fast-growing spring. We extend a huge THANK YOU to both our volunteers and the RMSC staff who came out today to help—and an extra special thank you to Wegmans for providing everyone breakfast!
