As February comes to a close, we are continuing to celebrate Black History Month and this year's theme of "African Americans and the Arts." Today, we are remembering the legacy of Ella Fitzgerald, often called "The First Lady of Song." Fitzgerald was a jazz singer who faced much discrimination during her career, but she overcame it to become an international star. She became the first African American to perform at the Los Angeles nightclub Mocambo, effectively opening doors for other Black artists. She was also an advocate for child welfare and disadvantaged youth. #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #ellafitzgerald

Today's quote comes from Langston Hughes, a poet, novelist and social activist who was considered a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. February is Black History Month and we would like to take this opportunity to honor the achievements and impacts of Black and African Americans. In keeping with this year's theme of "African Americans and the Arts," we will be sharing quotes from inspirational Black and African American artists, starting with Faith Ringgold. Ringgold is a painter, performance artist and activist who uses her voice and art to fight for equality and representation in art. She has won several awards for her art and her activism, including a National Visionary Leadership Project award in 2004 and a Peace Corps award in 2009. #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #faithringgold
