Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra Beach

This past weekend the Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra Beach provided snacks for Back to School with BEAM. Back to School with BEAM helps Beaches families get their children ready for school by providing students with a backpack, age-appropriate school supplies, and two books from Read USA & Scholastic Books.

Every year during our Mineral City Celebration we honor a 'Rock of the Community.' This year's 'Rock' was Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, M.D., also well-known as "Dr. Q,". Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, M.D., is a consultant and serves as chair of the Department of Neurologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville Inc. and he is recognized with the distinction of a named professorship, the William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professorship. Funds raised during the MCC not only go to area non-profits but also to support our honorees initiatives. This year mission:brain was the recipient-their mission is to provide patients in need with access to advanced neurosurgical procedures and to educate providers on advancements in neurosurgical technique and care.

The Best Rotary Club in the World concluded another Rotary year today, as President Jennifer Logue passed the gavel to new President Beverly Hicks Flanagan as more than 15 of the club's past presidents looked on. Guest speaker this week was John Laurence founder of Empowerment Media, a not-for-profit organization that aims to empower and motivate people to live their best lives through entertainment. John alongside his wife have created, produced and directed over 100 episodes of four network quality adventure reality television series developed to empower teens and young adults. Most recently, the Laurence's have created and produced their first video curriculum entitled the TWO@ATIME PROJECT. It will soon be seen internationally as a television series and used as a curriculum by youth organizations across the U.S.

Guest speaker this week for the Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra Beach was Vicky Oakes, an elections professional with more than 35 years of experience conducting elections in SJC. Vicky has served as the Supervisor of Elections in SJC for the past 12 years, and previously served as the Assistant Supervisor of Elections for 23 years. She shared that her and the Elections Office staff continue to work with local, state, and federal partners to secure cutting edge technology and ensure SJC Elections remain transparent and secure.

Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra Beach was honored to partner with The Ponte Vedra Recorder to present the 32nd Annual Local Heroes Awards. This year's honorees included Nease High School Lacrosse Coach Max Gurowski, who was accompanying the team to a game in West Palm Beach when he saved the life of a truck driver who drove into a retention pond. Carol Grysko, who puts her 40 years of nursing experience to good use providing medical care to working individuals who lack health insurance at Volunteers In Medicine Jacksonville. Charlotte Peverley, a recent Ponte Vedra High School graduate whose volunteer activities included spearheading a book drive that collected 3,000 books, collecting clothes for an orphanage in Bolivia and creating a program to 'Stop the Summer Slide' for students served by Blessings in a Backpack; Elizabeth Joshi, who founded the Ponte Vedra Litter Crew to keep our community beautiful; and Elaine Ashourian, Lori Moffett and Beth Angelo (not pictured), who led the charge to secure millions in federal funding to restore Ponte Vedra Beach.  

Recently members of Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra Beach served lunch to honor and celebrate our local Centenarians at The Players Senior Center. Residents who are age 90 to 100 and over enjoyed lunch and shared stories about what they've learned about life! Rotary International St. Johns County Council on Aging #serviceaboveself #rotary

Guest speaker this week was Charles C. W. Cooke, a senior editor at National Review Review and the former editor of National Review Online. A graduate of the University of Oxford, where he studied modern history and politics. His work focuses on Anglo-American history, British liberty, free speech, the Second Amendment, and American exceptionalism. An amazing presentation!
