New business director tenure at ad agencies and marketing services firms remains short, with 76% lasting 2 years or less, a significant increase from 38% in 2023. In our 2024 Agency New Business Report, 83% of agencies told us the average length of time to close business is 1-6 months, up from 75% in 2023. What does this mean in practice for your firm, from a business development standpoint? #1: Establish realistic expectations: It’s one of the hardest aspects of business development. Most agencies are not built with the business development mindset and flame out with an internal effort 3 or 4 months in. Agencies need to be prepared for an ongoing effort.
