Many engineers, unaware of the variety of nonmetallic materials at their disposal we discuss the advantages of these systems, and give examples of how polymers can vary in performance. Certain polymers, which display exceptional chemical and thermal resistance, or offer a unique bio-based origin, will be highlighted. A case study will be given showing an example of a process where a metallic system was failing and how it was replaced by a longer-lasting polymeric system.
