Great news! A new research opportunity will take students all the way to La Serena, Chile 🇨🇱 in NSF NOIRLab's new REU Chile Program 🤩. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to work closely with a NOIRLab research mentor on a research topic at the forefront of astrophysics. The program is open to undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents. In just its first year, Rubin Observatory will collect more data than all previous telescopes *combined!* Although it was first proposed to study dark matter, Rubin's science goals have expanded dramatically to address some of our most pressing questions across the cosmos. By the end of its ten-year survey, Rubin will have made exquisite measurements of more than 36 billion stars, galaxies, supernovae, and Solar System objects in total—more than 4x the population of the entire Earth. Sessions are chosen partially by public vote—that means you! The session is called “Revealing the Universe with the Biggest Movie Ever Made” and will introduce this innovative observatory and its mission to create the most detailed view of our Universe ever attempted—and how it will change how astronomy and astrophysics are done. Capping 20-years of collaboration with Rubin Observatory and L3Harris Technologies, a skilled team from Corning Advanced Optic’s Canton plant manufactured the cutting-edge blank from Corning® ULE® Glass (Ultra-Low Expansion Glass). This technological wonder will provide the deepest view of the universe to date.
