"Today, we celebrate the Supreme Court's ruling that upholds the federal prohibition preventing those subject to Domestic Violence Restraining Orders (DVROs) from owning or purchasing guns. As the California Partnership to End DV said so pointently, this decision recognizes the critical need to keep firearms away from individuals who commit acts of domestic violence, as access to guns significantly increases lethality in abusive situations. Women are five times more likely to be killed if their abusive partner has access to a firearm, and members of the LGBTQ community face disproportionately high rates of domestic violence, with nearly 44% of lesbian women and 61% of bisexual women experiencing intimate partner violence. Gun violence and domestic violence also have a broader impact: 50% of mass shootings include the murder of an intimate partner, and over 2/3 have a connection to domestic violence. As the agency that established the first domestic violence shelter in the U.S., Ruby’s Place has witnessed the vital importance of protecting those facing family violence over the past 53 years. We are proud to be part of a society that upholds this crucial law. April is a month of profound significance. It's #SexualAssaultAwarenessMonth, a time for raising our collective voice against the scourge of sexual violence and standing in solidarity with survivors. But amidst this awareness, April also carries a powerful theme of #hope. In our latest blog post, "Hope Observed," our staff psychologist, Nithya, dives deep into the theme of hope. She challenges conventional definitions of hope, showing how it defies linguistic bounds and becomes a lived experience, intricately woven into the fabric of human existence. One poignant anecdote she shares is of a father witnessing his son's graduation from a recovery program. Through tears of joy and resilience, the father finds renewed hope in his son's journey towards recovery. It's a testament to the transformative power of hope, transcending mere words and theories.
