There’s no denying that seven-month-old twins Giselle and Liesl Radek are adorable. They’ve been working with Physical Therapists Heather Finnegan and Julianne Trellicoso to address torticollis since they were only 11 weeks old. What is torticollis? Torticollis refers to tight muscles in the neck that cause a head tilt to one side. It can be present from birth or occur later in infancy. Early intervention is key. If left untreated, torticollis can lead to jaw and facial asymmetries, plagiocephaly (a flat spot on the baby’s head) and gross motor delay. How can physical therapy help? Physical therapists treat torticollis by completing gentle stretching, working on range-of-motion for the neck and trunk, repositioning techniques, strengthening activities, kinesiology taping and educating caregivers. Physical therapy will also help your child develop symmetrical gross motor skills such as rolling, sitting and crawling. Giselle and Liesl continue to make incredible progress. They are improving their gross motor skills while working on sitting balance and crawling to ensure the symmetrical development of their skulls. If you have concerns that your child may have torticollis, RUSH Kids Pediatric Therapy is here to help.
