The American Society of Landscape Architects Fund has awarded Safdie Architects Designer Mojtaba Nabavi and his team for the project “Post-Carceral Justice: Reclaiming the Bronx's Transitional Margins” the Honor Award for Student collaboration. Rikers Island, in the southern Bronx, NYC, currently houses ten detention facilities and over 6,000 inmates and is set to close by 2027 to be replaced with a borough-based jail system. This proposal and multi-scalar design intervention argue that Rikers can play an even more significant role in serving justice after the prison closure, becoming a catalyst for reducing systematic injustice by converting one of the Bronx's weaknesses—its prevalence of marginal landscapes, including Rikers itself—into a strength. Targeting New York's 43% recidivism rate, it proposes that a transformed Rikers could pilot improvements for over 2,400 marginal landscapes in the Bronx, aiming to break the cycle of reoffending and re-incarceration. An architecture and urban design studio imbued with a spirit of idealism and innovation.
About us
Safdie Architects is a design studio driven by a spirit of innovation and idealism, founded upon the guiding principles that architecture should be inherently timeless, connected to nature, and profoundly humane. Our design philosophy is rooted in Moshe Safdie’s powerful metaphor: “For Everyone a Garden”, the beautifully simple notion that sees architecture as a generous act of connecting us to nature and creating meaningful spaces of community that serve as catalysts for vibrant public life. While globally active, the practice is intentional in its response to local context, maintaining a nimble and bespoke approach to delivering some of the world’s most imaginative commissions across diverse scales, geographies, and typologies. Safdie Architects is an extended family of partners and colleagues, working collaboratively, with a shared spirit and an uncommon skill in transforming the firm’s humanistic ideals into reality. The practice has its design headquarters in Boston with offices in Jerusalem, Toronto, Shanghai and Singapore.

“Being able to collaborate on a project in a year-round comfortable climate with both an ambitious client and a creative structural engineer, Uribe Schwarzkopf presented a unique opportunity to advance our experimental thinking on housing typology. The result is Qorner’s unique design, which combines a fractalized structure, hanging gardens, and generous indoor and outdoor living,” said Senior Partner Sean Scensor. "Look for an exceptional site, an adequate budget, and an interesting program. Most importantly, choose your client discerningly," Senior Partner Christopher Mulvey told Archinect about pursuing international work. “The team of collaborators and specialists becomes more important when you are working in new territory or on a new project type,” Safdie’s Christopher Mulvey advises other firms. “Try to assemble a team with whom you have built mutual trust and can develop a shared language, and who can add intrinsic value (and local knowledge) to the assignment.” Read the full article below. #SafdieArchitects #Safdie #MosheSafdie #ChrisMulvey #Architecture #Architect #FutureCity #UrbanDesign
