Check out this article by Forbes about glamping and sustainable travel: "Booking.com’s Sustainable Travel Report 2024 found that 83% of travelers care about traveling sustainably. This is pushing hospitality brands to adopt more eco-friendly innovations. Off-grid accommodations, solar-powered retreats and green construction materials are becoming the new standard." The writer echoes many of our sentiments about the industry; however, he says that "early entrants could secure market leadership". We know about the glamping brands with bucketloads of venture money and a ton of locations. We also know about the small, independent operators with just one location. But what about the guys in between? Ken Barber of Wildhaven Glamping is just that. He opened his first Sonoma location in 2020 before expanding to a second property in Yosemite last year. He has no intention of charging jaw-dropping rates for the Uber-wealthy. Instead he targets the middle market. Think $150 - $350 per night, rather than $1,000+. At a Wildhaven site, you get hiking trails, communal areas, live events, yoga and more. And it’s working. They have more than 50,000 Instagram followers, a ton of great reviews, and a business doing so well they're expanding further. In 2023, young adults (18-32 years) led the market, followed closely by the 33-50 age group. Key Insights: 𝟭𝟴-𝟯𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 – The largest segment, drawn to adventure and unique travel experiences. 𝟯𝟯-𝟱𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 – A strong market, prioritizing family-friendly and immersive stays. 𝟱𝟭+ 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 – A growing audience, especially as comfort and luxury become bigger priorities. For operators, understanding these demographics is key to tailoring experiences—from adventurous escapes for young travelers to serene getaways for older guests.
